Progress towards a fourth phase at Dogger Bank, the world’s largest offshore wind farm, off the UK. Equinor and partners SSE Renewables have established commercial terms with the The Crown Estate which should lead to further enlargement of a project that will already see its first three phases produce enough power for around six million homes in the UK. To truly leverage the potential of renewables, the UK government will need to take a different approach to planning consent and ensure projects like Dogger Bank are matched by investment in energy storage and power market reform. There are encouraging signs already that onshore wind will benefit from changes. Time will tell how successful the new Minister of State (Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero), Ed Miliband, is at ultimately reducing both the country’s emissions in line with its climate commitments, and bills for the country’s citizens and businesses. #renewables #wind #energytransition #equinor #energy

Great to see that in the UK we continue to develop sustainable energy harvesting resources within our territorial waters, with another 2GW here from Equinor, and that this also helps to move towards a lower carbon future.

🌐 Project Update: Dogger Bank Wind Farm Phase 4 🌬️ SSE Renewables and Equinor have made a strategic decision regarding the fourth phase of the Dogger Bank Wind Farm project in the UK. The initial plans for green hydrogen production have been reconsidered, with a renewed focus solely on power generation from the offshore wind farm. This shift follows the recent confirmation of the onshore grid connection location in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The up to 2 GW phase, poised to be the world’s largest offshore wind farm, will connect to the proposed Birkhill Wood substation, a crucial element of National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade. The project team is actively engaged in a site selection process to identify cable corridors and other necessary onshore infrastructure associated with the grid connection at Birkhill Wood. A community consultation is scheduled for later this year to present the connection proposals to the local community, emphasizing transparency and community involvement. With the onshore grid connection location now secured, the previously considered option of directing wind energy towards hydrogen production has been retired from the project. This decision is aimed at optimizing the potential of the offshore wind farm for power generation. In a significant development from last year, contracts were awarded to Genesis, H2GO Power, and Fichtner for feasibility and optimization studies related to potential large-scale green hydrogen development on the project. Aside from the onshore grid connection, the developers are also exploring the future possibility of coordinating Dogger Bank D's development with an Offshore Hybrid Asset between the UK and another European electricity market. Exciting news from the UK's renewable energy sector! Equinor and SSE Renewables have announced their plans to focus on power generation from the offshore wind farm in the fourth phase of the Dogger Bank Wind Farm project. This is a significant step forward in the UK's transition to a low-carbon economy. The 2 GW offshore wind farm is planned to comprise 128 wind turbines and up to six offshore platforms, and if constructed, will bring the total installed capacity of the UK project to over 5.5 GW. 📣 Seagreen Wind Farm, our joint venture project with TotalEnergies, is now fully operational and generating clean, #renewable energy to Britain’s power grid.  Situated 27km off the Angus coast in the North Sea’s Firth of Forth, Seagreen is now Scotland’s largest #offshore wind farm as well as the world’s deepest fixed-bottom offshore wind farm. The 1,075MW wind farm is made up of 114 Vestas V164-10.0 MW turbines which have the capacity to generate enough renewable electricity to power almost 1.6 million homes annually, equivalent to two-thirds of all Scottish homes. 🏡 This is a landmark moment for offshore wind in #Scotland and for the global offshore wind industry. The Seagreen project has pushed new boundaries through its use of innovative suction caisson technology which has allowed the project team to set new records through the installation of the world’s deepest fixed-bottom foundations at the site. 👏 Big news! 🌊 The world's largest offshore wind farm has been officially opened by the Crown Estate, producing the first power to the grid from the coast of northeast England in the North Sea in the UK. 🤩 "Dogger Bank Wind Farm is being developed in three phases — A, B and C — and will have a total capacity of 3.6 gigawatts once fully up and running. Great news from Dogger Bank - the site of the world's future largest offshore wind farm - as its first turbine is successfully producing electricity and feeding it into the UK grid! Once fully functional in 2026, this massive wind farm is set to power six million homes each year. This milestone project saw the installation of GE Vernova's ground-breaking Haliade-X 13MW turbines, making it the first-ever energised offshore. To put their power into perspective, each turn feeds two days’ worth of clean energy into an average UK home. Dogger Bank will be constructed in three phases, utilising a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system for the first time in a UK wind farm. This cutting-edge approach showcases the UK's dedication to pushing the boundaries of renewable energy adoption. Towering at 260m high, the turbines at Dogger Bank are nearly double the size of London Eye and rival New York’s Rockefeller Centre in height. When completed, Dogger Bank will stand unsurpassed in its capacity, reconfirming the UK's commitment to a greener future and its leadership in the global shift to renewable energy.
