Norway: TotalEnergies acquires a 40% interest in a CO2 Storage exploration license TotalEnergies has signed an agreement with CapeOmega Carbon Storage AS, a wholly owned subsidiary of CapeOmega AS, to acquire the 40% participating interest held by CapeOmega in the CO2 storage exploration license ExL004 (the “Luna” project). “This transaction is an important milestone to grow our CO2 storage offering: subject to a successful exploration, this area could enable the storage of several hundred million tons of CO2 from hard-to-abate industries in Europe,” said Arnaud Le Foll, Senior Vice-President New Business - Carbon Neutrality at TotalEnergies. “With the Northern Lights start-up in 2024 and other projects under development in the Netherlands, Denmark and the UK, TotalEnergies is building a world-class carbon storage portfolio across the North Sea. Another exciting announcement from our member company Woodside Energy in relation to the development of a carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chain between Japan and Australia. Working with fellow ANGEA member Sumitomo Corporation, JFE Steel Corporation, Sumitomo Osaka Cement and "K" line (Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd), Woodside will study the capture and transportation of CO2 emissions from the Setouchi and Shikoku regions of Japan for injection and storage at Australian sites. These types of value chains are going to be critical for the implementation of at-scale CCS supporting decarbonisation in our region, which is why ANGEA recently launched the Asia Pacific Cross Border Carbon Accreditation Study. The Study seeks to design a whole-of-region regulatory framework for accreditation of CO2 emission reductions, which will help facilitate investment in CCS. Weyerhaeuser owns 187,500 acres of subsurface which covers five potential sequestration sites. These sites have now been opened up for exploration through an agreement between Weyerhaeuser and Lapis Energy Energy, with the aim of discovering prospective CCS development opportunities. The agreement accounts for all 187,500 acres of subsurface rights, including the sites based in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. The agreement also includes two new sites which were previously not identified as prospective opportunities for CCS development. The companies aim to find places where subsurface carbon dioxide sequestration could be made possible. The article below depicts the importance of finding carbon ways to store carbon and the importance of decarbonising industries and the atmosphere. New sites will be assesses, skills and knowledge will be shared and the overall aim of the project is to find usable sites that will allow the carbon industry to progress and develop. AT SOME POINT IN TIME, HYBRID AS A MODEL FOR FUEL USAGE/ENERGY PRODUCTION WILL ALLOW A STRADDLED BALANCE OF BOTH RESOURCE USAGE AND RESIDUE WASTE MANAGEMENT. ESG AS A CONCEPT IS GREAT BUT PRAGMATISM REQUIRES A BLENDED SOLUTION TO BE SUSTAINABLE, PREDICTABLE,RELIABLE,REUSABLE, RENEWABLE WITHOUT DISRUPTING EXISTING SKILLSET USAGE. 🙏

Koenraad Elewaut from Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat will speak on the 4th of July about geothermal policy in the Netherlands – a complicated jigsaw puzzle!   Geothermal energy plays an important role in the energy transition. It offers the possibility of supplying vast amounts of sustainable heat for a relatively low energy consumption. As such it not only offers the possibility of sustainable heating but play an important role in limiting the stress on the electricity grid. The development of geothermal energy is however not trivial, and many issues can hold back development. Heat is a particularly local resource which is not easy to transport, so the roll out of communal heating networks is a requirement for geothermal development. Also, the investment costs are high, and there is always the risk posed by uncertainty in the subsurface which could result in unsuccessful drilling of wells. Furthermore there are concerns not only when it comes to the risk of seismicity, but also potential impact on other usage of the subsurface such as the important drinking water reserves. The Netherlands has set itself the goal of producing at least 15 PJ of sustainable heat from geothermal sources by 2030, but we are far from that target today. If we are to achieve our goals we need to ensure the conditions are set to enable growth. These conditions expand beyond the scope of mining law and policy, as is evident from the importance of communal heating networks to the development of geothermal resources, indicating that a broad stimulation and policy development is of great importance.
