Assheton Stewart Carter, our CEO and Executive Director of the Fair Cobalt Alliance (FCA), will be speaking at the 7th Mining on Top Africa Summit next Wednesday, 03 July 2024, in Paris. Assheton will be participating in Session 3 from 13:45 – 15:00 BST, which focuses on creating sustainable and environmentally friendly value chains while maximising production. The main objectives of the session include: 🟡 Analysing African mining production in comparison to global production. 🟡 Benchmarking international best practices. 🟡 Establishing competitive mineral value chains and incorporating eco-friendly strategies for shared value and increased profitability. The session will be moderated by Yvonne Chileshe, an expert in Commodities and Value Chain Development at Secretariat of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS). Other speakers at the event include prominent figures from various sectors of the mining industry, such as Roseline MBAYE CARLOS from Ministére des Mines et de la Géologie, Dr Theo Acheampong from European Council on Foreign Relations, Florent Lager from MPD Congo SA, Geert Klok from Chamber of Mines of Mozambique, and Adrian Mill from ESS (Environmental and Social Sustainability). For the first time since its inception in 2018, the Paris Peace Forum, a global convenor of state and non-state actors working together to address salient global challenges, turned its attention towards artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), at its first event outside of Paris in Morocco. Taking on the #fairtransition theme, this meeting was especially significant as this was the first time the forum turned its attention to artisanal and small-scale mining, in partnership with the Fair Cobalt Alliance (FCA), a signatory to the forum’s Acting Together for a Responsible Critical Minerals Sector Call to Action, that calls for investment into the sector. Moderating a panel at this year's Paris Peace Forum in Morocco on Bridging and Local Perspectives—Integrating Artisanal Mining as Key for the Energy Transition, Assheton Stewart Carter, our Chief Strategist and Special Advisor to the Forum's Global Council on Transition Minerals, officially launched at the event, reflected on the socio-economic importance of ASM in the global cobalt value chain and the incredible opportunity the mineral holds to create lasting local prosperity. The Council, still under formulation, highlights the crucial importance being given to critical minerals, from where they are resourced to how their exploitation should ensure a just energy transition that is inclusive of the communities in which they come from. Côte d'Ivoire: A Miner's Dream Ah, the faded glow of conference badges and the thrill of chance encounters – a trip down memory lane through pictures captured in my phone. It was Mining Indaba 2023 in Cape Town, a vibrant gathering of industry titans and deal-hungry investors. As a delegate for my employer, I reconnected with old colleagues from South Africa and beyond, forging new bonds with prospective clients. But one particular picture truly sparked a fire in my mind. It was right before a session on Côte d'Ivoire, a land with great potential. The room was full of potential investors and established mining companies, all eager to know more about the Ivorian soil. Here's one fascinating truth highlighted during one of the presentations: a whopping 35% of West Africa's prime gold-bearing regions (known as Birimian zones by geologist) lie within Côte d'Ivoire's borders. Yet, the country holds the sad position of second-last in terms of already discovered gold deposits. This, my friends, is a paradox ripe with opportunity – a sleeping giant waiting to awaken. It is clear: the future of West African gold is bright, and Côte d'Ivoire is to lead the charge. This isn't just a wish from an ivorian; it's a geological reality waiting to be revealed. A truly insightful and engaging two days at the #JoburgIndaba this year. The cautious optimism was palpable with signs that the #GNU is definitely impacting the South African mining industry in a positive way. A few of the topical points this year included- - how do we learn from other countries and drive #exploration in South Africa in order to continue the growth path of the industry - which minerals are #criticalminerals and what does that mean for the mining companies - what are Big Business and Small Business seeing in the industry and what are they doing to assist in driving growth and economic development in the country - what legislative reforms are needed to encourage investment and to assist with ensuring the industry remains a “sunrise” industry. I have given a few suggestions around the last point in my recent article in #SAMining. It was also truly encouraging to see so many DMPR officials, Council for Geoscience representatives, the DDG, the DG and the Minister at the #JoburgIndaba. In fact the Minister was there for both days… engaging the various stakeholders in person… Is this not a sign of the “trust gap” closing? Thanks again to Bernard Swanepoel and his incredible Resources for Africa team for pulling off a truly worthwhile event!
