21 awards made nation-wide through the PRO Housing Grant, including $3.3 million for our neighbors to the north in Philadelphia. Looks like they'll use that funding towards a wide range of activities, including: -A comprehensive action plan to preserve existing affordable units -Developing Climate Resilient Design Guidelines -A pilot rehabilitation project to repair flood damage in homes -Developing local code and departmental regulations to streamline affordable housing development -A market feasibility analysis to study the optimal ratio of affordable-to-market rate unit availability Sounds like pretty great stuff, given the major housing challenges we're facing in the region. The American Dream, symbolized in part by homeownership, has long been integral to the identity of our nation, encapsulating the belief that hard work leads to prosperity, particularly in owning a safe and stable home. However, this dream (if it was ever real for everyone) remains out of reach for many Connecticut residents, marred by racism and further disrupted by the harsh realities of housing displacement and an enduring affordable housing crisis. The proposals in our new report involve eliminating barriers to adequate housing supply, reforming procedures to enhance housing affordability, safety, and justice, as well as investing in mitigating housing displacement and promoting housing stability. This is a great example of taking action on an significant adaptive challenge instead of waiting for someone else to do something. Workforce housing is a major issue in communities across the nation, and local governments are extremely limited in the actions they can take to bring in housing. With the hardwork and leadership from Tara Vasicek, Jean Van Iperen, Rick Bogus, their teams, and with the support of City Council, our city took action!
