Warner Bros. Discovery just completed an epic competitive play against The Walt Disney Company And they used PLG to do it At first glance, the lame would say: “But this is reducing the appeal of a HBO Max subscription” The savvy PMM or Compete Pro would say: “They are increasing the appeal, and reach, of their DC properties” One can argue that DC, although rich with potential, continuously flops on (almost) every product they release 🤢Green Lantern 🦹Justice League 💀Suicide Squad ⚡️Black Adam 🪲Blue Beetle And the list goes on…. Marvel has consistently kicked the crap out of DC for the last 10-15 years And Warner Bros. Discovery is doing something about it You see, Tubi has over 74 million viewers Which I can assume at least 37 million of those DO NOT have an active MAX account Which means Warner Bros. Discovery now has access to 37 million new homes across the globe And that means - a potential for 37 million fans to enjoy and support future DC properties And with James Gunn spearheading a new era of DC content…this couldn’t come at a better time So what do you think about the decision to share one of their best properties - for free #productmarketing #competitiveadvantage #plg

I think it’s definitely bold and will get attention, but I’m not sure even at free I’d watch a DC movie or sign up for tubi. This could get existing tubi subscribers to give them a shot, they tricky part here is if so many of their movies have sucked but they have a few gems what are the odds of someone a) giving them a shot b) picking something good c) loving it enough to go see anything new by DC. I know we chatted about how there would need to be a smarter strategy here to try and stack the deck in their favor because just dumping all of their content on tubi, doesn't mean people are going to be able to find something that they might like even if they are willing to roll the dice and try watching a DC movie. If I was Marvel and trying to be a bit snarky about all of this, it's easy to say that at least the price matches the quality of the movies. 😏

Love the analysis! Even if the overall rating of DC movies is lower than Marvel, I think moving them from HBO Max to Tubi is a good way to put more eyes on their collection and ultimately, use the fans feedback to make better films. What do you think?
