South Korea's Defense Minister Shin Won-sik warned that the country could harm its alliance with the U.S. and destabilize financial markets if it pursued a nuclear weapons program to counter North Korea. Despite increasing domestic support for a South Korean nuclear arsenal amid North Korea's expanding capabilities, Shin emphasized that such a move would lead to significant diplomatic and economic repercussions, including penalties for breaching the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. He advocated for strengthening U.S. extended deterrence instead. The region's strategic landscape has shifted due to U.S.-China rivalry and the Ukraine conflict, with North Korea's relations with Russia complicating dynamics. Shin noted North Korea's military support from Russia and mentioned potential shifts in South Korea's stance towards arming Ukraine if the situation escalates. Tensions between North and South Korea have recently intensified, with aggressive acts from both sides, including South Korea's resumption of loudspeaker broadcasts toward the North. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #Japan Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/g2Hagw3j

Kiev considering possibility of rebuilding nuclear weapons stockpile — newspaper According to Bild's source, it will take Kiev just a few weeks to make a bomb BERLIN, October 17/ The Ukrainian authorities are seriously considering the possibility of rebuilding the country’s nuclear weapons stockpiles, Germany’s Bild newspaper writes, citing a source. "We have materials and we have knowledge. If orders are issued, it will take us just a few weeks to make the first bomb," a Ukrainian official responsible for weapons procurement said. According to him, the West should "think less about Russia’s red lines and focus on [Western] red lines." On October 16, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky presented his plan to resolve the conflict with Russia to the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine’s parliament). The plan suggests that Kiev should immediately be invited to join NATO, be provided with more military aid, hit targets inside Russia with long-range weapons and be able to use European air defenses to protect the country’s territory. The plan also calls for the creation of "a non-nuclear strategic deterrence package" in Ukraine and the country’s post-conflict reconstruction with assistance from Western nations. There also are some classified annexes, which have only been presented to the NATO members that have significant military capacity. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova slammed Zelensky’s ideas as a set of meaningless slogans. She blamed him for pushing NATO towards a direct conflict with Russia. #business #finance #financialservices

The idea of South Korea developing its own nuclear weapons is resurfacing due to the military partnership between North Korea and Russia. Some U.S. pundits suggest this possibility, but local analysts find it unlikely and unrealistic. South Korean officials have raised concerns about the North Korea-Russia pact and warn against the feasibility of South Korea obtaining nuclear weapons due to international opposition and potential destabilization in East Asia. Despite the increased military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, experts urge neighboring countries, including South Korea, to respond rationally. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #SouthKorea Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gkxXyZjC

Though a second #Trumppresidency is not a foregone conclusion, #Nato members are gearing up to Trump-proof the organisation and reviewing their #defence strategies. Nato’s concerns about #Trump’s re-election were heightened by his flippant comment in February that he would encourage Russia to do whatever it wanted, if certain countries didn’t pay up, defying Nato’s principle that an attack on one constituted an attack on all. With two of the biggest superpowers being led by wildcards Putin, and potentially Trump, Nato members are rethinking their nuclear strategy. Both the #UK and #France have nuclear capabilities, and this provides an independent nuclear deterrence. However, Nato’s deterrence relies mostly on US #nuclearweapons deployed in #Europe - of which there are about 100 non-strategic warheads (down from 7,500 in the 1980s) deployed in five Nato countries - #Belgium, #Germany, #Italy, the #Netherlands and #Turkey. By comparison, #Russia has around 6,000 nuclear weapons - which constitutes the world’s largest arsenal - and can launch these weapons from land, sea and air. #WorldEconomy #Geopolitics #Diplomacy #Geostrategy #CorporateStrategy #Strategy #Politics #WorldPolitics #ForeignRelations #ForeignAffairs #ForeignPolicy #TradePolicy #EconomicPolicy #IndustrialPolicy #UnitedStates #EuropeanUnion #Eurozone #EuropeanCountries https://lnkd.in/gDXrP8k7

I was sure that I would not live long enough to see the #Republicans shaking hands with the #communists and Russia. Ukraine was a #THIRD nuclear power country. The #European #country. Where was #China? And NOW? The #Budapest #Memorandum on Security Assurances comprises three substantially identical political agreements signed at the OSCE conference in Budapest, Hungary, on 5 December 1994, to provide security assurances by its signatories relating to the accession of #Belarus, #Kazakhstan, and #Ukraine to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). The three memoranda were originally signed by three nuclear powers: #Russia, the #United States, and the #United #Kingdom. #China and #France gave somewhat weaker individual assurances in separate documents. The memoranda were signed in Patria Hall at the Budapest Convention Center with US Ambassador Donald M. #Blinken amongst others in attendance. President #Clinton made a courtesy stop at #Kyiv on his way to Moscow for the Trilateral Statement signing, only to discover Ukraine was having second thoughts about signing. #Clinton told #Kravchuk #not #signing #would #risk #major #damage to #USA-#Ukraine relations.

Threat of world war grows every day — Hungarian foreign minister Peter Szijjarto recalled that the Hungarian government had long stated that it was impossible to resolve the Ukrainian conflict militarily BUDAPEST, May 23/ The threat of a world war is growing due to "insane statements" by Western politicians speculating about sending soldiers to Ukraine against the background of exercises in Russia involving non-strategic nuclear weapons, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has said. He noted that "there has been no day without another crazy statement uttered by some of the European politicians." "There are those who want to send soldiers to Ukraine. Others are already speculating about the use of nuclear weapons. Every day the threat of a world war is getting closer," Szijjarto told a news conference after a meeting in Budapest with his Swiss counterpart Ignazio Cassis. "We see what is happening: European politicians are making statements about the use of nuclear weapons. The Russians are conducting exercises involving tactical nuclear weapons," Szijjarto said. He believes that "the time has come to stop this madness." Szijjarto recalled that the Hungarian government had long stated that it was impossible to resolve the Ukrainian conflict militarily. "That is why Hungary continues to tell its European partners that instead of indulging in crazy statements and fantasies that threaten to escalate [hostilities] they should spend at least half of their energy on achieving peace. Then there may be hope that this war will be ended at the negotiating table," Szijjarto emphasized. On May 21, Russia began the first stage of exercises including practical training in preparations for using non-strategic nuclear weapons. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, they are being held in response to provocative statements by Western officials and are aimed at maintaining the readiness to respond and ensuring the country's sovereignty. Missile units of the Southern Military District are practicing preparations for launching Iskander tactical missiles, while the personnel of the Aerospace Forces will equip air-launched delivery vehicles with special warheads, including hypersonic Kinzhal missiles, and head for patrol areas. #business #finance #financialservices

Excited to have my most recent article published with The Diplomat! The Washington Declaration has failed to effectively deter North Korea and reassure South Korea, as evidenced by North Korea's increased missile tests and South Korea's growing support for developing its own nuclear weapons. North Korea's new security alliance with Russia further complicates the situation, necessitating a more robust U.S. deterrence strategy. Potential solutions include enhancing the Washington Declaration, redeploying U.S. tactical nuclear weapons to South Korea, or passing a legislative commitment similar to the Taiwan Relations Act to reaffirm U.S. support for South Korea. https://lnkd.in/eyeqe2ee

This week, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the impending delivery of General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft to Ukraine was a ‘purposeful provocation’ by the West. As some models of F-16 are technically capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons, Russia has warned darkly that their deployment would push the conflict to ‘the point where it will attain critical mass and explode’. No one who isn’t a blind Kremlin partisan believes this to be a justifiable fear. First, Ukraine has no nuclear weapons, tactical or otherwise. Second, there has never been any suggestion of remote credibility that Nato member state might deploy any of their nuclear weapons to Ukraine. Third, the only party to the conflict which has raised the issue of nuclear escalation – on more than one occasion – is Russia. This is, however, part of a relentless Russian narrative that it is the innocent, aggrieved party in the conflict with Ukraine and that it will, reluctantly, be forced to take measures of self-defence which may be severe. When the Foreign Fecretary, Lord Cameron, said last week that Ukraine was free to use UK-supplied Storm Shadow cruise missiles against targets in Russia, the grievance card was on the table again in seconds. This proved, Russia’s Foreign Ministry declared, that Britain was actively engaged in a ‘hybrid war’ against them. ✍️Eliot Wilson https://lnkd.in/dJ8tbuMV

The Budapest Memorandum in 1994: Ukraine gave all its nuclear weapons exchanging it for security assurances from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Russia. The Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances comprises three substantially identical political agreements signed at the OSCE conference in Budapest, Hungary, on 5 December 1994, to provide security assurances by its signatories relating to the accession of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). The three memoranda were originally signed by three nuclear powers: Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom. China and France gave somewhat weaker individual assurances in separate documents. The memoranda, signed in Patria Hall at the Budapest Convention Center with US Ambassador Donald M. Blinken amongst others in attendance, prohibited Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom from threatening or using military force or economic coercion against Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, "except in self-defence or otherwise in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations." As a result of other agreements and the memorandum, between 1993 and 1996, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine gave up their nuclear weapons. #TheBudapestMemorandum #Ukraine

West balancing on edge of direct military confrontation between nuclear powers — Lavrov According to the top Russian diplomat, it is especially concerning that the three Western nuclear powers are among the key sponsors of the Kiev regime and the main initiators of various inflammatory moves MOSCOW, April 22/ Western countries are balancing on the edge of a direct military confrontation between nuclear powers, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in a video address to participants in the Moscow Non-Proliferation Conference. "Today, the United States and their NATO client states are still dreaming of inflicting ‘a strategic defeat’ on Russia and are ready to carry on with their policy of deterring our country ‘to the last Ukrainian.’ At the same time, the West is balancing on the dangerous edge of a direct military confrontation between nuclear powers, which could have catastrophic consequences," Lavrov pointed out. According to the top Russian diplomat, it is especially concerning that the three Western nuclear powers are among the key sponsors of the Kiev regime and the main initiators of various inflammatory moves. "This could create serious strategic risks and increase the level of nuclear threat," Lavrov noted. "We are convinced that to prevent further degradation of the world situation, maintain durable stability and create a realistic disarmament, all countries should pool their efforts to upgrade the international security system relying on the principles of multilateralism, equality and indivisibility. This is the only way of reducing interstate conflicts and ensuring real progress in arms control," the Russian foreign minister emphasized. #business #finance #financialservices
