We are so happy with yesterday’s event with Startup Grind Nordics! 💖 These are the moments that inspire us to keep giving back, spreading knowledge and nurturing the Nordic tech scene - pushing #foreverforward Startup Grind’s Regional Director Naimul Abd hosted a lively conversation with our Managing Partner Evelina Anttila and our Partner and Fund Manager Jessica Rameau. Here are a few highlights from the discussion: 🌌 Ecosystem: Sweden has a hot tech startup space, largely due to its encouraging safety net. However, a reduction in government backing for state-funded institutions is likely to result in less investment for early-stage startups with visible consequences in 2 to 3 years. 💸 VCs: First, just like startup founders, VC managers wear many hats to maximise their return on investments in a lean way. Second, venture capital is not the best alternative for all cases. Third, be clear if you want an active investor or not and what exit options you have in mind. 💁♀️ Wellstreet: We are company builders, so we move in much earlier and have a shorter investment horizon than other VCs, focusing on the growth tied to the exit strategy. For that, we constantly and actively support our portfolio’s growth needs. We don’t expect companies to be ready or have a long track record upfront - we identify the synergies and what we can contribute and then invest. 🤖 AI: AI bias is but a mirror of our society and the percentage developing it. Regulation is a way to guide the parameters that we want to be reflected in these products and services. Since tech is a very fast-paced industry, the solution is to focus the regulations on the consequences that AI can have rather than the tech per se. 🌱ESG: In 2030, ESG will be a higiene factor, so implementing a strategy must be a basic part of a company's development. An example of regulation driving change, SFDR now categorizes funds into different levels of ESG incentives and requirements they ask from their portfolio. Identifying and balancing the risks and opportunities for the company futureproofs it. Evelina and Jess also touched upon many other topics, like the due diligence process, female ownership and the gap between startups and larger corporations, so keep an eye out for the recording of the whole session. According to Dealroom.co, startups in Italy have gone from generating 105,000 jobs in 2018 to an impressive 309,000 in 2024.
