Coffe Talk with Chris, from Best Friends Coffee & Bagels in Brownsburg, Indiana. This was a really interesting stop. It’s homey with couches and various rooms. It has a very neighborhood hangout vibe going on that is awesome. Continuing my recent theme of let’s-try-the-odd-thing-on-the-menu, I ordered a mushroom coffee - drip coffee with mushroom powder. I’m sure there’s some supposed benefit to said powder, but I only noticed a little added grit. They also offer a French press and the bagels looked and smelled great. Bringing me out to Brownsburg this morning was Ben Ivers - a colleague from Terminus and a cofounder and Chief Product Officer at Tenon, a ServiceNow-centered startup building marketing workflows and tools for that platform. We talked a bit about the roller coaster that is early startups, where sometimes you’re fighting existential dread and incredible possibilities all at the same time. It can be a true “Is that light at the end of the tunnel an oncoming train?” sort of experience. Ben also helped clarify some things I’m thinking of building around coaching and consulting. To that end, we also talked a bit about how sometimes when you’re managing people you have to remind yourself that our lives outside of work can impact our lives at work. If one of the folks you’re managing is having a bad time at work, it’s often worth checking if everything is OK outside of work. You can’t always - or even often - help with stuff outside of work, but often being there as an understanding release valve can go a long way. And you’ll never regret giving somebody permission to go deal with that stuff instead of trying to work when they don’t have it. There’s always tomorrow. Speaking of! I’m thinking of closing these coffee talks after this week. I still have a few I need to reschedule and a few lined up, but y’all have been lovely and I figure I should let you get back to it. I’m still open for coffees! And coffee shop suggestions! I’ll just start doing it more quietly starting next week. Because it also feels like time to knuckle down and get to work. Stay tuned.
