New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced budget cuts that, if enacted, will essentially wipe out #communitycomposting infrastructure in #NYC, as well as threaten widely used #foodwaste drop-off sites operated by GrowNYC at Greenmarkets throughout the city. “NYC has long been a leader not only in #composting, but community composting … that keeps the composting process and #compost use local, while offering community engagement and education opportunities,” according to Institute for Local Self-Reliance. ILSR’s 2022 Community Composter Census identified New York as home to the largest concentration of community composters in the U.S.—a thriving ecosystem of local businesses, environmental nonprofits, and neighborhood gardens. #climate

Climate Journal: News to Make Waves wrote about Hometree partnership with The Canopy Sligo, as Szilvia Szabó writes: “The Canopy shopping centre in Sligo facilitated a unique collaboration when its owners decided to acquire nearly 90 acres of land for restoration to support Hometree, a charity dedicated to establishing and conserving permanent native woodland. Situated along the Easkey River in South Sligo, this land is a unique blend of peatland, blanket bog, pockets of ancient Hazelwood, and species-rich grassland. Ray Ó Foghlú, Hometree’s Development Lead, says: ‘We hope this location will become a showcase site for us and local landowners will see what is possible. We have plans for a farmer outreach programme here, providing information and financial support for woodland creation along the Easkey River, besides other educational and community programmes.’ Ray adds, that involving farmers is crucial to making this a reality. In the past 2.5 years, he has worked with hundreds of farmers on land restoration and biodiversity projects. ‘I believe observation is the beginning of devotion – you have to see it to fall in love with something. As an individual, can I make a difference? Yes, absolutely. And you can do it while meeting and making friends at the beach! The Great British Beach Clean is a week-long citizen science event run by the Marine Conservation Society, where hundreds of beach clean ups take place across the UK and Northern Ireland. This year, it is from 15th-24th September, so you can get involved from tomorrow! Litter data collected during beach cleans drives conservation work and gathers information needed to influence policy changes which have tangible effects. For example, since the 5p charge for plastic bags was implemented in the UK, there has been a 55% drop in bags on beaches! Volunteering is a great way to have an impact while having fun - why not gather your friends or your team at work, head outside, and make a difference together?
