Countervailing power from his friends in the Executive Board as well as from his friends in the Board of Directors was fundamentally lacking. Jumbo has invested tens of millions of euros in sports sponsorship. Suppliers dare to say no when the CEO asked his suppliers for sponsorship? The CEO of Jumbo Retail Group with an estimated market value of € 11-12 billion is a perfect example of narcissism at the top. Together with co-author Dr. Antoinette Rijsenbilt, we published our book on narcissism related to CEOs. Our scientific research confirmed that the only way to counteract is to deliver ''𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲' into the Board Room". The title of our book is 'Big Boys Big Ego's and Strategic Intelligence'. I assume nobody at Jumbo has taken the effort to read it. "Only the Paranoid Survive" by Andrew Grove in 1996 and Nassim Taleb's "Black Swan" in 2007 are comparable milestones." Taking note of another campaign prominently addressing gender equality (or the more progressive framing: empowerment), this one on a slightly bigger stage and supported with serious star power in Messi: https://lnkd.in/etayzwX6 Thinking of the many recently released "state of the world" reports and high profile conferences and summits, gender equality and its consequences seems to be a bit drowned out in the tumult of the polycrisis. Sport has long been the break-- the momentary escape-- from dealing with the weighty troubles in the world. But considering the upheaval in pro golfing in the past year, continuing headlines about racist incidents in soccer, and many other weighty issues where the sporting world has been center stage, social activism in sport seems ripe to be back on the agenda for debate, while the discourse on CEO activism seems to have fallen off the charts (IMHO).
