#Montenegro recently conducted a self-assessment on equitable access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) using the Equitable Access Score-card. This tool, applied in 14 countries across the pan-European region, aims to ensure equity in #WASH access. 🚰 📝 The project, under the Protocol on Water and Health by United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and WHO Regional Office for Europe, had its preliminary findings discussed at a workshop in Podgorica in May 2023. Hosted by the Institut za javno zdravlje Crne Gore - Institute of Public Health of Montenegro, UNECE, and supported by the Ministère de la Santé, the workshop gathered key stakeholders to review and improve WASH access. 📊 Challenges such as data gaps and fragmented institutional responsibilities were highlighted. Defining and supporting vulnerable communities is a key recommendation. 🚀 This assessment helps Montenegro align with EU directives, enhancing WASH access for all, especially vulnerable groups. 💡 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dXDbirZU #WASH #WaterEquity #PublicHealth #Montenegro #UNECE #WHO #SustainableDevelopment #EUIntegration Nataliya Nikiforova Armin Bigham Ghazani Diane Guerrier Sonja Köppel Leonid Kalashnyk

2.2 billion people globally lack access to clean, safe drinking water, 3.5 billion lack access to safely managed sanitation services, and 3.4 million people die each year from scarce or contaminated water sources. Because water is essential to life, the lack of water is a crisis multiplier—an underlying factor contributing to and compounding conflict and humanitarian crises. But this also means that improving water management can reduce the potential for conflict—and when conflict occurs, help to ease its impacts. The latest blog from International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) explores the links between gender, crises, and water security: https://bit.ly/3xh10ce #NEXUSGainsInitiative #OneCGIAR Claudia Ringler

Ethiopia’s vulnerability to climate change requires more modern and sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) systems. But regions across the East African nation have low resilience to climate-related challenges. ⚡ With this in mind, the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) and UKaid, along with the Ethiopian Government, are implementing the initiative “Strengthening Climate Resilience Systems in Water, Sanitation, Hygiene” (SCRS-WaSH). 💙 A part of the Ethiopian Government’s wider One WaSH National Programme, this initiative is addressing the growing climate problems assailing Ethiopia, causing severe droughts and floods and even threatening water security and sanitation. 🍂 With support and expertise from NIRAS and Water Aid, SCRS-WaSH integrates climate-resilient practices into WaSH programmes, improving immediate access to essential services and developing a sustainable system geared towards environmental and social health. 💪🏾🌳 This multifaceted approach includes innovative technologies, strengthened institutional frameworks and active community engagement. By targeting beneficiaries at federal, regional and facility levels across 13 regions, SCRS-WaSH is helping integrate water management and sanitation practices into the daily lives of the nation’s people. Key objectives of the initiative are: 💧 Fortifying water supply management in 30 rural multi-village schemes; 💧 Integrating climate resilience into existing and new water supply schemes; 💧 Establishing robust post-construction maintenance systems and supply chains for spare parts. And these efforts do not stop at enhancing water schemes. SCRS-WaSH is also creating jobs, particularly for women- and youth-run micro and small enterprises. Plus, it addresses period poverty in schools through education and resources for menstrual hygiene management. 🩸 There are a lot of targets this initiative aims to achieve. 🎯 If you want to know more about what SCRS-WaSH is doing for Ethiopians, we invite you to read our project brief by clicking the link below! Happy World Water Day! In the United States, we often forget that water is a necessity and we have the luxury of easy access to it. Worldwide, around 2 billion people don’t have access to clean drinking water, and over 3 billion people don’t have access to healthy sanitation practices. The theme for this year's World Water Day is 'Water for Peace'. There are more than 3 billion people worldwide that rely on water from sources across national borders, and only 24 countries have cooperation agreements for their water. As water scarcity becomes a growing concern, we are likely to see rising conflicts as clean sources of water may become even fewer in regions that are already suffering. Along with that, we will see an increase in the spread of waterborne diseases, heat exhaustion, and other health concerns that could be mitigated through access to clean water. Water is an intrinsic human right, and we need to continue working to ensure access to clean water for all. WORLD WATER DAY 2024 - WATER FOR PEACE First things first. Water is a universal solvent. By its status, it is a generally accepted resource - what this means is that if you go to Canada, UK, The USA, the Caribbeans, countries in ASIA, AUSTRALIA, every other part of the Earth and you come back to Africa - Nigeria, everyone alive accepts water. So it makes it true to say water is a unifying resource and anything that can unify or is generally accepted by different races, tribes and people - can bring peace to these nations! 🤷♂️ That was quite easy isn't it - very logical so to speak. 😊 Imagine you wake up one morning and found out that there is no single drop of water anywhere on earth, how would you feel? 😱 Terrible is an understatement, shattered is close. There will be a lot of conflicts, anarchy , chaos and an impending doom. It is very unimaginable. 🙆♂️ March 22 every year, the UN celebrates The World Water day Just to remind us of the usefulness and protection of fresh water. SDG number 6 talks about water and sanitation for all in 2030. WATER FOR PEACE is such a powerful slogan, which focuses on the critical role water plays in the stability and prosperity of the world. Today yours faithfully did my part of the global campaign by educating the workforce and reminding them of our civic obligation to water as an "advocate" of peace. The video was not well captured and the language used here was to suit the level of understanding of the category of workers in this section of the project - passing the message efficiently and effectively was my goal. 🤓 In my Local Nigerian pidgin English language, we say "WATER NO GET ENEMY" which translate to water has no bounds, no grudge and no poison- water accepts all. Let us as a global family, 👨👩👦👦 expedite actions in our own small ways and efforts to ensure the safety and sanitation of water in our local areas of residence and operations. 👀 Remember, small consistent efforts makes BIG DIFFERENCE! 🙌 Thank you all. Enjoy the video. i guess i was a bit Spiritual and religious today.... 😉

Today, as we celebrate World Water Day, the United Nations World Water Development Report 2024 underscores the critical role water plays in our existence and highlights the pressing challenge of water scarcity—affecting billions worldwide. 🌊 Water: The Essence of Prosperity Water is not just a resource; it’s the bedrock of economic growth, societal health, and ecological balance. It’s vital for sustaining life, nurturing crops, preserving human health, and upholding the delicate functions of our planet. 💧 The Right to Clean Water Despite being recognized as a fundamental human right, over 2.2 billion individuals globally are deprived of access to safe drinking water. Achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 6—universal WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) access by 2030—remains an elusive target. It’s imperative that we intensify our efforts to bridge this divide. 💦 The Ripple Effect of Water Scarcity The impact of water scarcity extends beyond mere shortages—it erodes livelihoods and perpetuates poverty cycles. In 2022, approximately half the global population faced severe water scarcity at some point, with a quarter grappling with ‘extremely high’ water stress levels. 👩👧 Empowering Women Through Water Access The scarcity of water disproportionately burdens women and girls, who shoulder the responsibility of water collection in 70% of water-deficient households. This not only affects their health and education but also hinders their potential. Ensuring clean water access is pivotal for fostering #GenderEquality. 🚽 Sanitation Crisis A shocking 3.5 billion people still lack access to safely managed sanitation. With 80% of wastewater untreated, our planet’s lifeblood—rivers, lakes, and wetlands—as well as human health are under threat.
