🌍💧 #Zambia joins United Nations #Water #Convention amidst severe drought In response to an ongoing water crisis and severe drought that has significantly impacted food and energy production for its 21+ million people, #Zambia has officially joined the UN Water Convention. This move comes after Zambia declared a National Crisis and Emergency in February 2024, underlining the urgent need for effective water management. As the 5️⃣5️⃣th member of the Convention and the 12th African nation to join, Zambia is reinforcing its commitment to improved water management both within and across its borders. This decision follows recent accessions by Cote D’Ivoire and Zimbabwe in July, reflecting a growing momentum for water cooperation across Africa. Given that over 90% of Africa's freshwater rivers, lakes, and aquifers are shared across national borders, regional collaboration is crucial. World Water Week 2024 is now in full swing, bringing together water experts from diverse cultures to share their insights on how water can bridge borders and foster a more peaceful and sustainable future. 💧 This topic is especially relevant to the #WaterConvention Secretariat, which has been at the forefront of promoting the sustainable use of transboundary water resources for over three decades. The Convention has played a key role in facilitating cooperation, supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), contributing to peace and stability, and preventing conflicts. 🕊 A key event for the Water Convention is the meeting of its Parties, held every three years. This event is the largest and only international forum dedicated to advancing transboundary water cooperation at a global level. The upcoming 10th session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP10) will take place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 23 to 25 October 2024. Organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning of Slovenia, in collaboration with the Water Convention Secretariat (hosted by UNECE), this session is a critical milestone for the global water community. #Montenegro recently conducted a self-assessment on equitable access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) using the Equitable Access Score-card. This tool, applied in 14 countries across the pan-European region, aims to ensure equity in #WASH access. 🚰 📝 The project, under the Protocol on Water and Health by United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and WHO Regional Office for Europe, had its preliminary findings discussed at a workshop in Podgorica in May 2023. Hosted by the Institut za javno zdravlje Crne Gore - Institute of Public Health of Montenegro, UNECE, and supported by the Ministère de la Santé, the workshop gathered key stakeholders to review and improve WASH access. 📊 Challenges such as data gaps and fragmented institutional responsibilities were highlighted. 🌍 Strengthening Transboundary Water Cooperation in #SouthSudan 💧 South Sudan is grappling with severe challenges, including annual catastrophic floods, droughts, and substantial development and humanitarian issues. To tackle these challenges and promote sustainable growth, South Sudan is moving towards joining the United Nations #WaterConvention. 💦 During a national workshop on 18-19 July 2024 in Juba, South Sudan confirmed its intention to accelerate accession to this global agreement. The workshop, attended by over 80 participants from various sectors, highlighted the benefits, obligations, and next steps for joining the Convention. 🌍 #Zimbabwe, a landlocked country in drought-stricken Southern Africa, has made a significant commitment to water cooperation by joining the United Nations #WaterConvention. As the 54th Party and the 11th African nation to join this treaty, Zimbabwe is taking a proactive step towards addressing its pressing water challenges, exacerbated by climate change and complex socio-economic, environmental, and political factors. Home to around 17 million people, Zimbabwe's accession to the Water Convention comes just a week after Cote d’Ivoire's accession.
