Since 2000, Pakistan has inadequately invested in agriculture development and farmer support, as reflected in the low Agriculture Orientation Index (AOI), which measures the proportion of government spending on agriculture relative to its economic contribution. This highlights the urgent need for increased investment in rural infrastructure, research, technology, and gene banks to boost productivity. A critical issue is Pakistan's 65% seed availability gap, exacerbated by supply chain inefficiencies and insufficient research and development in the agriculture sector. The seed market is also hindered by delayed legislation, weak Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) protection, limited R&D funding, and regulatory failures, which have allowed the proliferation of substandard seeds, particularly in Genetically Modified (GM) cotton. To address these challenges, Pakistan must overhaul its seed sector by shifting regulatory focus to combat sub-standard seeds, offering fiscal incentives for R&D, upgrading agriculture extension services, and strengthening seed evaluation processes. Collaborative efforts from the government, private sector, and extension agencies are crucial. Global examples, like Mexico's MasAgro Consortium, which focuses on hybrid maize development through public-private partnerships, and the Philippines' successful collaboration between PhilRice and private seed companies for high-yielding rice seeds, showcase potential models for improving seed access and agricultural productivity. #EmpoweringPakistanWithData #OICCIPakistan #Economy #AgricultureInnovation #ResearchandDevelopment #Economy #Investment #SustainableDevelopment #SDG #WheatCrisis #Exports

Agricultural transformation in the cassava industry in Ghana!🌱 I am excited to share our latest publication: "A Local-Level Agricultural Transformation in the Making? The Case of the Cassava Industry in the Ashanti and Volta Regions of Ghana" published in Oxford Development Studies. This is the result of field work we conducted in Ghana in January - April 2022. Chekhros Kilichova, Cesar Gonzalo Davila Novoa, Prof. Magnus Jirström, Prof. Martin Andersson, and Dr. Ibrahim Wahab. In this study, we dive into how Ghana’s cassava industry is evolving on the local level. Using a qualitative exploratory research design based on interviews with cassava farmers and other stakeholders, the study identifies several factors that together showcase manifestations of a transformation process in the Ashanti and Volta regions. We find: - Growing cassava farm sizes - Use of new technology - Higher productivity - Expanding market opportunities - Increased profitability of cassava farming - Improved livelihoods - Changing labour structures #Agriculture #DevelopmentStudies #Ghana #CassavaIndustry #SustainableDevelopment #OxfordDevelopmentStudies #AgriculturalTransformation
