Sarytogan Graphite Limited (ASX:SGA) managing director Sean Gregory joins Proactive’s Jonathan Jackson after the company reported high performance for lithium-ion batteries utilising anodes of Coated Spherical Purified Graphite (CSPG) from Sarytogan Graphite. Coin-cell batteries made from #CSPG have now cycled 100 times, demonstrating a significant improvement in performance due to the coating process. This enhancement has increased market pricing from approximately US$2,500 to US$8,000 per tonne. Gregory expressed satisfaction with the results, highlighting the premium pricing potential and the opportunity for direct relationships with battery manufacturers and OEMs. The coating process, which smooths the surface of the spherical graphite and reduces surface area, has now been incorporated into the pre-feasibility study, which is on track for completion by September 2024. Spheronising and purification testwork results conducted in Germany confirm that Lithium Energy Limited (ASX Code: LEL)’s Burke Graphite has the potential to be exceptional feedstock to the Battery Anode Material (BAM) market. As competition in the midstream ternary cathode material industry and downstream gigafactory industry have become more consolidated, the leading pCAM companies rely on their production scale and technological advantages to drive their own industry concentration. In 2023, the top five Chinese ternary pCAM producers were CNGR Advanced Material Co., Ltd, Guangdong Brunp Recycling Technology Co., Ltd, GEM Co., Ltd, Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co., Ltd, and Lanzhou Jintong New Materials Energy Storage Power Co., Ltd, of which these companies accounted for 75% market share, up 4% from 2021. In order to strengthen their balance sheet, based on their pricing model, the companies initiated plans to integrate upstream (ni-co assets) starting from early 2018 to mid-2022, and "an overall concentrated release of new nickel production capacity was expected to be brought into the market during in 2023 to 2024" (and this is just a few companies and not even a complete breakdown). The solar sector is experiencing record low pricing for n-type polysilicon, which has dipped to just $5.5/kg. The steep price decline is reshaping the economics of solar cell production, as n-type material reaches price parity with p-type cells. The industry is navigating through a period of decreased demand and operational shutdowns in China’s key factories, leading to a surplus in supply. Alternative BESS technologies growing in prominence 2024 looks likely to become the peak year for lithium-ion market share within BESS, set to reach 92%. In the coming years, this percentage is set to fall as alternative technologies start to be deployed at greater volumes. Sodium-ion and vanadium flow batteries are the most advanced of these alternative technologies, with activity almost entirely focused in China for now. Other technologies like zinc-flow, metal-air have potential to become prominent for longer duration, whereas technologies like zinc-ion can be used for high power applications and UPS. #ASXNews Exceptional Battery Testing Results Achieved with Burke Spherical Purified Graphite Lithium Energy Limited (ASX Code: LEL) is pleased to confirm excellent battery electrochemical testwork results from spherical purified graphite (SPG) produced from the Company’s Burke Graphite Project (Burke) located in north-west Queensland. This provides further validation of the exceptional quality of the Burke Graphite as highly valued Battery Anode Material (#BAM) for use in Li-ion batteries. • Electrochemical battery test work overseen by ProGraphite delivers outstanding results with lithium-ion battery cells made with Burke uncoated Spherical Purified Graphite (SPG) (purified to 99.97% TGC) proving to be highly suitable as anode material for use in Li-ion batteries. • Testwork results show Burke uncoated SPG has: • High specific charge capacity of 362 - 364mAh/g which is close to the theoretical maximum specific charge capacity of natural graphite of 372mAh/g; • Very high Coulometric efficiencies of 99.3 – 99.8% over multiple charging and discharging cycles of the battery test; and • High crystallinity and low levels of #graphite degradation under multiple high charging/discharging cycles indicates enhanced battery stability and longer battery life. • Lithium Energy will now focus on the development of an SPG Pilot Plant in Queensland as the next stage in development of a world-leading vertically integrated, Australian based Battery Anode Material (BAM) Business. #LEL Executive Chairman, William Johnson: “These outstanding electrochemical battery testing results are the final piece of the ‘BAM puzzle’ that confirms Burke Graphite as an exceptional material for use in Li-ion #batteries. “The Company will now focus on optimising the BAM development pathway and implementing a process to produce marketable quantities of SPG that will be used to secure offtake agreements.
