THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION (4IR), INVESTING IN OUR MEGACITIES’ REALESTATE ENCOMPASING EXCESSIVE VACANT SPACE IS CRUCIAL FOR MAINTAINING OUR NATION’S COMPETITIVENESS IN THE WORLD DURING THE 21st CENTURY. The advantages of multidirectional rope-less elevators (MDRLE): 1 of 2 An improved modern external public transport system, can’t ignore the circulation inside the buildings. In fact this could be strengthened and put in more direct communication with the circulation inside the buildings, almost without interruption of continuity. The concept of integrating private and public transportation systems within the same circuit is known as integrated or multimodal transportation. This approach aims to optimize transportation networks by combining different modes of transportation, such as buses, trains, subways, and even innovative systems like multi-directional rope-less elevators, to provide seamless and efficient travel experiences for users. MDRLE are a revolutionary advancement in vertical transportation technology. Here are some of their advantages: 1. Increased Efficiency: MDRLE can move both horizontally and vertically, allowing for more flexible and efficient transportation within buildings. This means faster travel times and reduced congestion, especially in high-rise and densely populated buildings. 2. The usage of MDRLE in healthcare buildings, offer significant advantages. By functioning as internal “ambulances,” MDRLE can transport patients and staff quickly and safely within the building, reducing waiting times and walking distances. Additionally, the ability to remain in a controlled environment can enhance patient safety and comfort during transit. 2. Space Optimization: Traditional elevators require dedicated shafts, limiting building design and usable space. MDRLE can move freely within a building’s structure, eliminating the need for shafts and maximizing usable space for occupants or other purposes. 3. Improved Safety: Safety considerations are crucial in implementing MDRLE systems, and the design should include features such as obstacle detection, collision avoidance, and emergency response mechanisms. Specialized booths or stations for intervention and assistance can also be incorporated into the system to ensure swift and effective responses to emergencies or situations requiring assistance. 4. Customizable Routes: These elevators can be programmed to travel along customizable routes, adapting to changing traffic patterns and user demands. This flexibility allows for dynamic optimization of elevator operation, reducing wait times and improving overall efficiency. ….. to be continued.. ….. Julio He (Building Design + Construction) Using local or recycled materials, connecting to a cleaner power grid, and installing high performing efficient systems are steps in the right direction. But to get the airports of the future, we should look at making them as efficient as possible. While many airports are pledging net zero goals, most need further strategies to get there. Today, we can design airports that are climate resilient, durable, long-lasting, and healthy for occupants—we can design airports using Passive House standards.

Network Rail’s Wales and Western region has developed a new type of sleeper with environmental benefits. The region worked with Network Rail’s Technical Authority, responsible for safety and engineering, to create ‘hedgehog’ sleepers – so nicknamed because the ends look like hedgehogs nesting under the rail. The sleepers contain 90 per cent less embedded carbon than wooden models and 78 per cent less than those made from concrete. As part of Network Rail’s sustainability strategy, research found that sleepers account for 30 per cent of the carbon embedded within railway infrastructure. #railnews #railways #ukrail #rail

Glad to have participated in this Design challenge as a Judge. The solutions we need to address our Transport challenges are with us since we are the users and hence we understand the real issues we face as we move. Providing insights into the issues the Teams needed to consider and the depth of analysis required for the proposed solutions was a good return into the analytical side of Engineering solutions for Sustainable Mobility which is my passion. Am happy that one of the Kenyan Teams won the Prize. Kenya presented many solutions and this represents the true picture of the number and extent of matters the Kenyan Transport space faces. We have to think solutions. We have to integrate several ways to address our challenges. Kenya needs solutions. Not debates. To translate these proposals; those that won and those that didn't into practical solutions for the benefit of all Kenyan Transport users is going to be our next challenge. I will now move from the high Judge seat into the implementation seat and roundtable of implementation conversations and hopefully provide insights into how the proposed solutions can be translated into workable, sustainable solutions. #ReshapingTransport #Solutions #TransportSolutions #UNESCO #KeNHA #BusyProfessionals #SustinableMobility #ValueforSociety #ValueEngineering #SystemsThinking
