*Advanced Biosecurity in Livestock and Poultry Production.* I extend my gratitude to the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine for awarding me this esteemed certificate upon the successful completion of the advanced course in biosecurity for livestock and poultry production. The implementation of biosecurity measures is essential for maintaining a healthy production system for both poultry and livestock. Without these measures, it becomes exceedingly difficult to meet the objectives and targets set for the flocks. Furthermore, effective biosecurity practices not only guarantee profitability for farmers but also contribute to the overarching goals of One Health. #AdvancedBiosecurity #LivestockHealth #PoultryProduction #OneHealthInitiative #VeterinaryExcellence

Foot–and–mouth (FMD) disease is a highly contagious viral livestock disease, endemic in East Africa. FMD is one of the most damaging, economically infectious transboundary diseases -- especially because about 70% of the population in Tanzania and Uganda is employed in the #livestock industry. Production losses due to FMD disrupt national, regional, and international trade in animals and animal products; undermine the potential of the livestock sector; and compromise food security. To tackle #FMD, the USDA Trade of Agriculture Safely & Efficiently in East Africa (TRASE) project is collaborating with the Republic of #Uganda and the United Republic of #Tanzania to build capacity for FMD surveillance, early detection, and rapid response to outbreaks, while improving prevention and control mechanisms. TRASE has trained 24 Ugandan and 31 Tanzanian veterinarians, procured six deep freezers for sample storage, and supplied a Veterinary Syndromic Surveillance Application for faster reporting. We're proud of our TRASE colleagues for creating a healthier #livestock sector, ensuring food security, and fostering cross-border cooperation in the #EastAfricanCommunity. Our latest study, with Charity Kibooga and Nakiyemba Constance, delves into antibiotic usage patterns among Ugandan livestock farmers, most of whom are small holder livestock keepers, highlighting significant public health concerns. Key findings show that one in three farmers used antibiotics over the one-year period of investigation, with 15% using them monthly. Factors like production systems and perceptions of antibiotic efficacy (some incorrect) drive this usage. We recommend enhanced veterinary extension education and public awareness to ensure safe antibiotic practices. We acknowledge and are grateful for the funding received from The 50x2030 Initiative. Read the full paper to explore our insights and recommendations! https://lnkd.in/d8_sg7De #Research #LivestockFarming #PublicHealth #AntimicrobialResistance
