Two conferences that receive far less attention than they deserve are happening midyear. The Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States and the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries are critical opportunities to shine a spotlight on the challenges faced by small island developing states, or SIDS, and landlocked developing countries, or LLDCs, on their different development pathways. These events do not get the global attention or coverage that the G20 or Davos meetings do, and the challenges that they seek to address are often overshadowed by crises, conflicts, and issues in developed parts of the world. Yet, both conferences offer the opportunity to agree on comprehensive programmes of action for SIDS and LLDCs, and to chart a path for sustainable development for their communities and the world. Together, the 39 SIDS and 32 LLDCs — 16 of which are in Africa — represent some of the most vulnerable and marginalized populations on the planet. Ahead of both conferences, our Deputy Director for the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support Francine Pickup reflects on 4 development areas to build a sustainable future in these countries: https://lnkd.in/dgyYtjRs

Francine Pickup identifies numerous key points for our LLDCs and SIDS, but the two which stand out the most for me are: (1) that LLDCs need trade facilitation, regional integration, and connectivity, climate finance, and financial resources, and (2) a coordinated approach and partnership between government, civil society, and the private sector. I would also point out that most LLDCs and SIDs lack effective and manned competition and consumer agencies, leading to critical gaps in economic analysis required for national public policy planning and assessment. The role of these agencies as more than just a rubber stamp to conduct approvals, but as a main contributor to effective regional integration and national market health, balancing interests for the wider good, is a greater imperative now more than ever.

As we get closer to the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), significant progress has been made in shaping the conference program, featuring a comprehensive schedule of high-level events and side activities. On-site, off-site, and virtual satellite events will occur parallel to the main conference. Most of these activities will be led by member states, UN entities, and accredited organisations, like Island Innovation, in support of the SIDS4 agenda, offering a chance to share best practices and foster new collaborations that can propel a sustainable future for SIDS. We will soon disclose more information about the 6 side events organised by Island Innovation during our time in Antigua and Barbuda, but you can already browse through the themes on our dedicated website page. Oceano Azul Foundation will take part in the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), where the global community will converge to address the pressing issues facing SIDS and their vital relationship with the ocean 🌎 As nations heavily reliant on marine resources for socioeconomic development, #SIDS face unique challenges exacerbated by climate change. Rising sea levels, ocean acidification, and extreme weather events threaten these coastal communities, while limited resources and capacity hinder effective management strategies. 🏝️ "Small Island Developing States are ecologically fragile and vulnerable, yet their oceanic resources hold immense potential for sustainable development," as stated by the United Nations. The convergence of crises, from climate change to the economic fallout of COVID-19, underscores the urgency for action. SIDS, disproportionately impacted, require innovative solutions and partnerships to navigate these challenges. Oceano Azul Foundation is committed to fostering sustainable ocean governance and facilitating access to resources for SIDS and developing countries. Our presence at the conference aims to amplify the importance of collaborative efforts in building resilient and prosperous maritime nations. Let's seize this opportunity to chart a path towards a sustainable future for SIDS and ensure the preservation of the ocean. It was a great opportunity to attend the Euro-Mediterranean Innovation Marketplace 2024. This year, the event focused on three key sectors: Health, Renewable Energies, and Climate Change, following the priority areas set by the UfM Ministerial Conference on Research and Innovation in June 2022. We had excellent talks and discussions with Mr. Joan Borrell, Deputy Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), and Ms. Signe Ratso, Deputy Director-General of DG Research and Innovation at the European Commission. Our conversations covered youth mobility, the funding of research projects in the southern Mediterranean, and the challenges related to migrants and refugees, especially in Egypt. #europe #youthmobility #climatechange #Sustainability

Nowhere on the planet are the consequences of climate change more evident than in Africa, and yet investments in green transition are lagging far behind. Africa is also the continent where population growth is expected to be the greatest: Africa's populations will double by the year 2050 – and then double again by 2100. This will lead to increased energy consumption plus massive demand for all kinds of consumer goods, which will only further strain the climate, nature, and environment. Listen to Jarl Krausing, international director at Concito, Birgitte Frost Mathiesen, director of Invest for Impact Denmark, Klaus Lehn Christensen, regional director for DI in East Africa, and Karin Elisabeth Lind, director of Access2innovation, discuss what is needed to kickstart green investments in #Africa.
