🚰Revolutionizing Wastewater Treatment: Tackling Highly Concentrated Sludges (HCWS) Challenges 🚰 As environmental impacts and population growth increase, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) must shift from conventional to highly concentrated wastewater sludges (HCWS). This shift presents challenges due to the complex, non-Newtonian nature of HCWS and the nonlinear increase in viscosity. Our recent paper addresses these challenges with key findings: 🌟 Key Insights: Complexity of HCWS: Increased viscosity makes it difficult to pump through pipelines, requiring more pressure and challenging the feasibility of pipe flow transportation. Necessity for Accurate Prediction: Essential for designing and optimizing pumping infrastructure. Innovative Approach and Advanced Simulations: Developed methods for rheological characterisation of HCWS using a fully instrumented pipe loop facility. Used rheological parameters in direct numerical simulation (DNS) computations, avoiding the limitations of conventional turbulence models. Validation: Achieved 2-15% error in predictions compared to ~75% error of conventional methods. 🔬 Impact for WWTPs: Our study highlights the need for precise rheological characterisation and numerical simulation, providing a solid foundation for the intensification and optimization of WWTP pipeline systems, paving the way for more efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment processes.
