Despite being deemed healthy prior to departure, 80 sheep recently dropped dead during a flight from Australia to Indonesia. The incident is currently under investigation by Australia's Department of Agriculture. Every year, the global demand for meat and other animal products subjects millions of cows, sheep, and other animals to unimaginable suffering via live export. Also known as “live animal exports” and “live transport,” this practice involves transporting thousands of animals at once across long distances, often overseas and to countries with less stringent animal welfare laws. Learn more about the live export industry and what you can do to help by clicking the link below! #LiveExport #MercyForAnimals #LiveExportTrade #Sheep #Vegan #PlantBased https://lnkd.in/gs__8z7U

Wednesday was a historic day as the draft Animal Welfare (Primate Licences) (England) Regulations 2023 passed Committee stage. This secondary legislation is on course to become enforced in April 2026, giving private owners two years to comply with the standards that the Government stated in the debate would be akin to those of a licensed zoo. Wild Futures worked with a number of NGO's on what was described in the debate as "an excellent briefing". This is not the ban that we had hoped for, but if the guidance that accompanies the regulations truly sets the standards that the ministers are saying they want to see, then this legislation should reduce the suffering of many, many primates. What next? The legislation is due to go to the house of Lords on the 13th of Feb. We are also waiting to hear news on the guidance that will inform the Local Authorities on how to enforce the legislation. This is vitally important to primates getting the protection they deserve. Wild Futures will continue to work with our colleagues and DEFRA to get the best outcome possible. Australia just made a historic decision for animals - the end of live sheep export by 1 May 2028. The phase out is based on recommendations from an Independent Panel who met with >2,000 individuals, held 96 stakeholder meetings & 22 forums, & received >800 submissions & 3,300 survey responses, combined with existing research and commissioned advice. Here's some highlights from their 200+ page report: - The Australian Government committed to phasing out live sheep exports by sea as part of its 2022 election campaign - Animal welfare is at the heart of the government’s policy - By their nature, live sheep exports by sea present a risk to animal health & welfare. There's ongoing concern among many in the Australian community about how sheep are treated on live export journeys & in export destinations. Documented incidents of poor animal welfare, sheep deaths & cruelty have driven concerns within the community about the continued operation of this trade - 80% of the written submissions noted support for the phase out policy - Of the respondents who indicated a possible time frame for the phase out, 92% suggested it should happen within 3 years - The Panel believes that the Western Australian sheep industry can be profitable and sustainable during the transition period and beyond the end of live sheep exports - The Panel recommends that the end of live sheep exports by sea from Australia be legislated during this term of the Australian Parliament Glyde P et al (2023) Independent Panel Report: Phase Out of Life Sheep Exports by Sea. Did you know? "84 % of Europeans believe that the welfare of farmed animals should be better protected in their country than it is now. A similar number (83%) support limiting the transport time of animals. Almost three quarters of respondents (74%) support better protection of the welfare of pet animals in their country and 90% of Europeans consider that farming and breeding practices should meet basic ethical requirements" . What is one thing all Europeans seem to agree on? Apparently, it's 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗲 🐤 🐖 🐇 Animal welfare matters to people. A LOT: ❗ 90% of EU citizens consider the welfare of farmed animals to be important. ❗ 84% of Europeans believe that the welfare of farmed animals should be better protected in their country. ❗ In all 27 EU member states, at least 80% of people want a ban on cage farming in Europe. ❗ 70% of Europeans would be willing to pay more for animal produce with higher animal welfare standards. The debate is over. But it's not only what Europeans think. The EU's own scientific assessments have shown that current legislation on animal welfare is outdated, unscientific and in need of urgent reform. So... what do those who represent all of us in the European Parliament think about both animal welfare and the growing demands from us all? Today we're launching our animal welfare scorecard campaign - based on the excellent research by Compassion in World Farming EU - showcasing which MEPs and political groups have voted in favour, or against, better animal welfare over the last five years (read full analysis ➡ https://lnkd.in/eyhXk2VE) Stay tuned over the coming days to see how MEPs in your country have been voting! 👀👀 EEB position paper on animal welfare 👉 https://lnkd.in/epTpeUam Nature, climate and pollution scoreboard 👉 https://lnkd.in/dxyY76uH #votefutureEU #UseYourVote #AnimalWelfare #AnimalWelfareEU

MYTH: Endangered animals are completely protected by animal welfare laws and so we don’t need to worry about them. FACT: In two separate investigations into zoos in Thailand, Lady Freethinker (LFT) documented widespread cruelty against orangutans and tigers. LFT Investigators documented these endangered animals in chains for tourists to take selfies with, forced to “perform” in shows, being handled roughly, and more. Learn more about what undercover investigators documented in zoos in Thailand, and how you can help, by visiting our website.
