This week is the first plenary session of the new legislature after the June elections. Why is this important? The European Parliament meets in #plenary session every month in Strasbourg for a four-day 'part-session' (Monday to Thursday). During these days, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) debate and vote on key issues. Being the first plenary of this new political term, this session is particularly important because MEPs will appoint the new President of the European Parliament (this happened yesterday) and the new President of the European Commission (the vote will take place tomorrow). OK, but... what place does animal welfare have in all this? The former Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, is running for re-election. Should this happen, it would be the perfect opportunity to re-affirm her commitment to review animal welfare legislation. A commitment she failed to honour in the previous term. Stay tuned for tomorrow's election #DelivertheProposal

Our analysis of the newly elected European Parliament is finally complete. Positively, one in ten candidates who signed the #VoteforAnimals pledge, committing to doing better for animals, were elected. This means that 102 MEPs are publicly committed to #animalwelfare. Above all, these MEPs belong to different groups in the European Parliament, proving once again that animal welfare is not a left- or right-wing issue, but rather an issue that affects all parties of the political spectrum. This is very positive for us, animal advocates, because it opens more doors and thus more opportunities to create change for animals in the EU.
How well are animals represented in the new European Parliament? We're finally ready to share our analysis of the European elections and results are not at all bad! Our #VoteforAnimals campaign has proven to be very effective in all Member States, engaging candidates from all political parties, proving that #animalwelfare is a topic of increasing importance across all the political spectrum. Over 1,000 candidates have taken the pledge, committing to making animal welfare a priority. But how many have been elected? Find out in this video.

Why are the #EUelections2024 so important for #animalwelfare? We asked some of the MEPs who signed the #VoteforAniamls pledge to explain the EU's crucial role in improving legislation for animals. The European elections are only two weeks away. So far over 700 candidates have pledged to do better for animals, but many more have yet to do so. Specifically, we need the lead candidates in each group to take the pledge, as they are the ones with the highest likelihood to be elected. Help us contact them and let them know that when you cast your vote in June, you will make their commitment to animal welfare a priority. Send a message to candidates asking them to take the pledge, committing to 10 demands for higher welfare standards in Europe: https://lnkd.in/d7G5izer

Did you know there is a way for European citizens to directly participate in the EU’s legislative process? This process is called ‘participatory democracy’, and it’s meant to make citizens’ concerns a driving force for change. But how does it work? Political scientist and Director of The ECI Campaign Carsten Berg explains this concept in detail. 📹 As this Sunday will be #InternationalDayofDemocracy, we will be taking this week to talk more in depth about EU democracy, citizen participation and animal welfare.

Tasmanian politics update: PREMIER ISSUES ULTIMATUM TO TUCKER AND ALEXANDER Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff has threatened an early election unless independents John Tucker and Lara Alexander sign a new agreement that provides certainty to the Government and Tasmanians. Mr Rockliff’s ultimatum follows Mr Tucker last month threatening to bring the Government down if he didn’t get his way on animal welfare, and on a new High Performance Centre for the future Tasmanian AFL team. “Mr Tucker and Mrs Alexander are not honouring the intent of the agreement, instead they have continued to shift the goalposts, and threatened to withdraw confidence and supply unless they get their own way,” the Premier said. “As a result, the Parliament is becoming unworkable. This cannot go on. I will not allow the Government or Tasmanians to be held to ransom. “Tasmanians deserve certainty, and that’s why I have written to Mr Tucker and Mrs Alexander proposing a new agreement.” The Premier said he did not want to go to an early election if it can be avoided, he wants a new agreement and certainty for Tasmanians. Mr Tucker and Mrs Alexander are scheduled to meet with the Premier to discuss the proposed new agreement next Friday, February 9.

"Positive lists and poor welfare: the dysfunctional world of reptile keeping" 👉https://lnkd.in/eMrU-4Hu This Vet Record feature article explores the ethical questions and welfare issues raised by reptile-keeping, looking at the opportunities and limitations of legal frameworks around the private keeping of reptiles. At our 2024 Discussion Forum in May, the subject of keeping exotic animals, including reptiles, was raised in a question-and-answer session after the panel discussion on animal behaviour, showing growing interest and concerns from vet professionals in caring for those animals. 📷 Image by kuritafsheen77 on Freepik

In our newest report, Clawing at the Cages: Big Cats in Zoos, we explore the numerous welfare and conservation issues of keeping big cats in zoos. We also highlight instances of facilities continuing to exploit big cats in ways that are unsafe for animals and humans, even after the passage of the Big Cat Public Safety Act, a federal bill that was signed into law in 2023 on the grounds of protecting public safety.
