An international team of scientists published a study today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences NEXUS emphasizing the urgent need to align political will, economic resources, and societal values to ensure a more sustainable and equitable world. Led by University of Hawai'i at Manoa researchers, the 18 authors combine their expertise in earth and ocean sciences, politics, law, public health, renewable energy, geography, communications, and ethnic studies to assess causes, impacts, and solutions to a multitude of worldwide crises

The #CoreResearchFacilities at the University of Massachusetts Lowell stepped in to help young researcher Yuxuan Zhang test the lichens in the Lower Neponset River in Boston. This article highlights how facilities like the UML Core Research Facilities pave the way for students to explore cutting-edge research opportunities and gain hands-on experience in state-of-the-art facilities. Wendy Gavin, Lab Manager with the CRF and Scott Balicki with the Boston Latin School worked together to provide Zhang with the resources needed to conduct her research and find answers on what happened to one of her favorite places. At a time when #STEMeducation is more crucial than ever, this collaboration sets a shining example of how institutions can work together to nurture the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators. Citizen science, that can be defined as ‘the active engagement of non-professional scientists in scientific knowledge production’, can have great scientific and societal benefits. But it is also fraught with challenges as the existing research system is not truly adapted to this approach and many research institutions and policymakers are still hesitant to promote its use.  The OECD Global Science Forum (https://lnkd.in/eusEBBZp) workshop that just took place over the last two days precisely aimed at addressing those challenges, looking from both the practitioners’ and the science policymakers’ perspectives. The very rich discussions will be used to develop a policy framework, including experiences, challenges and good practices from a diversity of international stakeholders, which will help science policymakers integrate considerations of citizen science across science policy and promote broader understanding and policy consensus on the roles of citizen science.
