EU Science, Research and Innovation’s Post

Embracing #solar energy is key to accelerating the green transition in Europe! Large-scale installation of rooftop photovoltaics (PVs), as well as innovative floating PV coupled with hydropower and bifacial PV along roads and railways can offer incredible opportunities with minimal environmental impact. In today’s post of #JRCinMaps, we dive deeper into the capacity potential of photovoltaic applications in the EU, country by country. According to our study, these applications could generate 1,208 terawatt-hours of electricity per year. That is around 48% of the EU's 2022 electricity consumption! This is the future. The energy balance needs to increase the level of energy storage this will give the electricity grids a breather.

Large scale installations on commercial and industrial buildings like warehouses can generate megawatts of power and rival the cost of utility solar. By maximizing generation and exporting the excess, you can unlock the potential to create a new energy asset class and generate some of those TWhs of energy!

It's encouraging to see innovative approaches like rooftop PV, floating PV coupled with hydropower, and bifacial PV along roads and railways being considered to tackle the challenges of land competition and environmental impact for us, but also for our next generation. The estimated potential of over 1 TWp in installed capacity truly underscores the significant role that PV technology can play in achieving the EU's ambitious renewable energy targets and carbon neutrality goals... 😅 provided that politics doesn't throw a wrench in the works

Great when using rooftops and existing infrastructure - not great when destroying and replacing nature with resource consuming products. So, increase innovation, including human behaviour, for lower consumption.
