"The future of agriculture in the EU - assessing the state of agri-food policy and what could lie ahead for the next Commission" was the subject at an excellent and inspiring conference organized by the Representation of Flanders and Think Tank EUROPA. Despite the lack of equality in the panel 😅, there was agreement that the green transition will also be high on the agenda for the next Commission and EU-Parliament. Good open dialogue with all stakeholders is imperative, as is thorough preparation in the Commission with a view to ensuring the right balances between the many different challenges we face in the EU.

Established Chair of Social and Public Policy (University of Galway) and Chair of the Board of the National Museum of Ireland
These are the slides for my paper on simulating historical farm income distibutions presented at the World Congress of the International Microsimulation Association in Vienna. Extraordinary how the sector has changed since the 1950's. 40% of farmers had incomes of a euro a day. Farm inequality increased during both the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Agreement in the 1960's and on EEC entry in the 1970's. Great to catch up with my great colleagues in the IMA.

Senior Expert, Rural and Territorial Development at AEIDL (European association for innovation in local development)
Today at #MOVINGconference I had the privilege of facilitate a discussion on post-2027 EU policies impacting rural areas with Toma Šutić (Vice President´s Šuica Cabinet), Benoit Nadler (DG REGIO, 9th Cohesion Report), Orsolya Frizon-Somogyi (DG AGRI, research), and Lidija Pavić-Rogošić (European Economic and Social Committee Rapporteur #LTVRA). The least that it can be said is that there is a need for change (for the better: more integration and synergies, more capacity and less complexity, better regulation, real multilevel governance) and that the next MFF and the associated EU might indeed the bring a very significant change from the present status quo (but we still do not know in which way). It is going to be a very exciting couple of years, that is for sure. AEIDL (European Association for Innovation in Local Development)

The European Parliament belongs to all of us: In June 2024, millions of EU citizens evaluated candidates and programs, ultimately electing a new European Parliament with 720 seats and a renewal rate of about 45-50%. This massive democratic exercise spanned all member states. I hope you didn't miss it because the outcomes will influence many aspects of your life! The decisions made will impact everyone, including crucial policies on #food, #environment, and #agriculture, as well as upholding democracy and peace. The European Parliament of 2019 was a different world, a different Europe. In 2024, new questions are challenging our MEPs. It’s time to shift to an industrial deal. The European industry needs innovation, sustainable practices, and fair trade. The food industry is advocating for policies that ensure competitiveness while upholding EU standards. European policies should reflect changing priorities towards food security and autonomy, adapting to an evolving context, and shaping a sustainable, competitive, and innovative industry. Engage and participate! Two weeks after the vote, there's still too much talk about national effects and consequences. We need a vision that advocates for policies in the interest of all European citizens #togethereu .Bart Degeest Audrey Bru Esben Laulund Cristina Ferretti Francesco Girardo Karen Vokes Niklas Larsson Anita Johansen François Guerin Duresa CETAKU-FRITZ, PhD Huub Scheres

Our article published on the reality and the green façade and rhetoric of the Hungarian government, which serves only as one tool among others to rent-seeking and keep the ruling power. #green industrial policy, #Hungary, #environmental protection, #illiberal country
The article aims to shed light on the environmental risks of the Hungarian autocratic economic policy coupled with increased state interventionism and the revival of industrial policies... The article published with Ilona Rac and Emil Erjavec in the Journal of European Integration examines the impact of Brexit and the European Green Deal on the 2023-2027 CAP reform and argues that the post-Lisbon Treaty decision-making rules and procedures have slowed down the transition to post-exceptionalism (no longer an exclusive role for agricultural interests). https://lnkd.in/dDx6GuUE

🎉Great news everyone! Have you heard about the €1.4 billion in additional funding for EU research and innovation in 2024?💰 🌐Last week, the European Commission approved an amendment to the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2023 – 2024. This update outlines research activities for the upcoming year, aligning with the Horizon Europe Strategic Plan 2025 - 2027, which sets the strategic directions for EU funding. 📈 Thanks to this amendment, the 2024 budget receives a significant boost, reaching a total of €7.3 billion. The #EU started this week with a Yes to #RestoreNature and it closes this week with a strategic dialogue on #Agriculture. In the dialogue, Ursula von der Leyen will once again bring together stakeholders to discuss the future of EU agricultural policy, focusing on #sustainability, #innovation, #foodsecurity. These 2 events exhibit 3 commonalities: ✅ Both events mark beginnings, not ends. The Law to Restore Nature, and the process towards a resilient, regenerative European agriculture are beginnings of marathons (not sprints). ✅ Both processes are people processes at their core. This is key to remember in an era of excel sheets and numbers. People processes deserve appropriate attention, time and resources to succeed. Practitioners from the #humanities, and from the professions of #diplomacy #mediation #participation and can - and will - make a world of a difference. ✅ Both processes shall be seen as critical #investment: Whenever we actively and professionally foster #contact #trust #dialogue #relations #cocreation #participation in and with #rural #regional stakeholders, we also foster mutual understanding, and political and social #peace and #stability. #leadership4future #EuropeanUnion #EuropeanGreenDeal #sustainabilitymatters #biodiversitymatters Hannah Abdullah Sudha David-Wilp Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff Christoph Thun-Hohenstein Diplomatische Akademie Wien Anne Monier Anneke Kirsch Mirjam DONDI Karolina Begusch Pfefferkorn Stefanie Evita Wehlend Laura Maanavilja Silvia Nanni LeVoci Vincenzo Carlotta Alfonsi Karine Badr Claudia Chwalisz Jascha R. I see Hungary's EU Council Presidency as a pivotal moment for advancing environmental and agricultural reforms. It's essential for Hungary to champion sustainable policies, particularly in the Common Agriculture Policy, and support the EU enlargement process for Ukraine and Moldova. We can ensure a resilient and united Europe by prioritising inclusivity and green initiatives.
