A fascinating couple of days LSX in London. There was no shortage of insight at the intersection of MedTech, BioTech and HealthTech for digital health. It was great to hear from speakers from Pharma like Gregoire Guillet from Servier, Beth Wolff from Lundbeck, Dominic James from MSD and Ventsislav Dobrev from our partner Ypsomed AG talking about the challenges and opportunities that Digital Health presents. Great insights too on the Medtech side from speakers like Thomas Hummel from Fresenius Kabi and Aneta Gawlowska from Medtronic. Key takeaways for me include: ✅ Everyone is still searching for the right Digital Health business models that are sustainable, scalable and ideally independent of the core medical device or drug revenue ✅ The fragmented healthcare ecosystem means that there are a lot of friction points that slow adoption; partnering across the ecosystem will be a key part of everyone's future strategy ✅ Start small but plan to be able to scale fast - platform strategies will be essential Thanks all for a great event!

Chief Medical Officer, MedTech & External Innovation at Johnson & Johnson; Board of Directors, Medical Device Innovation Consortium (MDIC)
In today's healthcare landscape, there is an abundance of information empowering patients to actively shape their own healthcare journeys. This empowerment presents an incredible opportunity, as well as a significant responsibility, for us to develop solutions that truly center around patients. At the European #MedicalDeviceSummit in Berlin, a little over a week ago, I had the privilege of discussing how Johnson & Johnson is advancing its commitment to patient-centered innovation. At #JNJ, our approach starts with listening to all stakeholders – patients, healthcare professionals, regulators, and others – and integrating their perspectives into every stage of product development and evaluation. By capturing and understanding these perspectives, we can move purposefully and swiftly to address the world’s toughest healthcare challenges. For instance, we're working on generating regulatory-grade real-world evidence to enhance patient access and decision-making; we collaborated with Ariadne Labs to develop the Device Briefing Tool; and we are taking a unique approach to quantifying benefit-risk assessments for surgeon and patient benefit. These are just a few ways we're delivering impact for patients. Additionally, bioethics is the cornerstone of our work within #JNJ’s Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO) and plays a critical role in navigating complex ethical challenges. See comments section below for more information on these important initiatives. Events like the #EMDSummit offer invaluable opportunities for industry-wide collaboration and idea exchange. Together, we can make a positive impact on the lives of patients who rely on quality care for their health and well-being. I'm grateful for the insightful discussions at the summit and remain optimistic about the future of patient-centered care in #MedTech. #myCompany

Should be an interesting webinar on Friday. See more on the Needs-Lead Innovation programme at https://lnkd.in/eDWvFUd2 "The programme applies a “learn by doing” approach using proven biodesign, lean start-up and design thinking methodologies. Throughout the programme, participants will learn and apply the process of investigating and identifying unmet customer and commercial needs, prioritising those needs, identifying potential solutions, assessing their commercial potential and developing compelling business cases for stakeholder and funding approval. This approach ensures that participants understand the “Outside World”- of the customer, market, ecosystem and the “Inside World” of the business, strategy and resource-planning. This intensive programme also allows extensive customer/user investigation and commercial de-risking, ensuring a ‘market pull’ rather than ‘technology push’ approach to product innovation.
Join Connected Health Skillnet, dConnect & Angles Consulting Paul Anglim PhD on Friday, 25 October from 9:30- 10:20 for a live information webinar to explore the upcoming Digital Health Innovation Programme 2024 - a tailored and hands on needs-led innovation training programme for the medtech, pharma and digital health sectors with a unique focus on digital health and connected devices. The regulations are fine, please don't change them again. Consider what has failed around its implementation and maybe everyone reflect on how we can improve coordination mechanisms and reduce the abundance of conflicting interpretations across notified bodies, competent authorities, manufacturers and health institutions. For an industry (MDR) that generally is comprised of engineered products we have created an incredibly complex methodology requiring hundreds if not thousands of policy makers, consultants, lawyers and non-engineering or clinical people all giving differing 'opinions' or 'guidance'. Let's try and get back to the root of why all of us are in the industry (to protect and improve human health). Does another 5-10 years of rewriting policy do this? Really???? How about looking at the current healthcare system and saying - where is the greatest risk, lets all (actors) work out how to achieve safety, demonstrate performance and then use Common Specifications, Delegating measures and our true north to solve it together. The problem I see is that noone has really demonstrated the problem from the eyes of the patient or clinician and then challenged ALL actors to solve it. Simpler, Safer. ⚕ We could even use the latest MDCG guidance on root cause investigation and I will guarantee you that the Articles and annexes of the regulation will not feature in the top 20 initiating circumstances / latent pervasive or other bones on the Ishikawa. 😉

🌟 A heartfelt thank you to the Biopôle Lausanne team for the remarkable event yesterday, co-organized with digitalswitzerland, focusing on the unique challenges digital health startups and scale-ups encounter during the crucial transition from design to deployment. Yesterday's event illuminated the path for many of us in the digital health sector. Tigen Pharma's presentation was a highlight, brilliantly outlining their comprehensive framework. They covered everything from equipment setup, data collection strategies, to the integration of digital twins and business applications. This structured approach ensures consistency across platforms used in CGT autologous clinical trials, which is nothing short of essential. The panel discussion was equally enlightening, exploring critical topics like patient centricity, intellectual property rights, IT infrastructure, and MDR standards. Each panellist brought profound insights that underscored the importance of maintaining focus on these areas as we move from the design and development phase into clinical trials. 🔍 The takeaways from this event are invaluable as we strive to navigate the complex landscape of digital health innovation. Last week was my first Medtech conference. A few key themes for me: -It was heartwarming to learn that many startups were born from personal experiences, such as a loved one suffering from a medical condition or hardship. The journey from an 'idea' to a 'device' is incredibly inspiring! -I learned about how medtech innovation is helping to address the healthcare system's capacity shortages. Devices that reduce operating room (OR) time, integrate with wearables, employ robots to reach remote areas, utilize AI to predict diseases, and promote in-home care are just some examples. -Software is being developed to streamline workflows and reduce communication gaps between stakeholders, which ultimately helps to address backlogs. -Patient centricity was a recurring theme in many panel discussions. The focus was on the importance of considering not only physicians or hospitals as clients during R&D, but also the patient, who ultimately benefits. As someone passionate about including the patient voice in strategy, this was particularly heartwarming to hear. To learn what Canadian doctors and nurses would like to see from innovation to reduce procedural backlogs, read my colleague, Sana Siddiqui's, blog post: https://lnkd.in/ew9NXz79. #Healthcare #MedicalTechnology #CanadaHealthcare #LEOMedical
