Film is both an Art form and a business… from the production business and all it entails, to the marketing and distribution of it to the exhibition and down all of that business, it involves both hard and soft skills and it involves some heavy infrastructure and technology… So why is it then that investors, bankers, fund managers and even Governments, struggle to see the business case? Globally the film space is valued at almost $400bn and the gaming development sector (which falls under film) is valued at almost $700bn 🤔 UNESCO pegs the sector value in Africa at above $20billion and attendees at the #AfricaCinemaSummit are convinced it is upward of $50billion It is important that filmmakers learn to tell their story properly and map out the return on investments… it is also important that the various businesses and business opportunities down the value chain be spotlighted… This is the goal of the film investment breakfast meeting by the National Film Authority Closing the gap between the film sector, film businesses and the money market… Show me the money!!! NEWS // Portugal Creates Cash Refund for High-Budget Films and Series This month, Portugal has unveiled a 30% cash refund incentive to attract higher-budget film and TV productions. This cash refund is in addition to the existing cash rebate of 25% - 30%, known as the Tourism and Cinema Support Fund (FATC). Administered by the Instituto do Cinema e Audiovisual (ICA), the Portuguese national film agency, these incentives aim to establish Portugal as a premier filming destination. The incentives are available to national and international projects of all budget ranges and structures. The goal is to integrate productions organically with Portugal's rich heritage and diverse landscapes, while providing a boost to the local film industry and economies. With its stunning backdrop, skilled crew, world-class facilities, and now powerful financial incentives, Portugal is poised to become one of Europe's brightest film-making hubs. The 2024 European Film Market sets new records: over 12,000 trade visitors from 143 countries came, 69 countries presented, 1,263 buyers and 664 films were shown in 1,029 screenings, including 536 market premieres. Producers also introduced an additional 660 new film projects on the Producers & Project Pages, arranging a large number of meetings in search of international partners. This enabling the EFM at the 74th Berlinale, which ended yesterday, to draw a remarkable balance after a week of market activities. “From day one, it was apparent that the first trade fair event of the year was very well-attended and extremely busy. The market participants’ meeting schedules were filled to capacity. Many high-turnover deals were being reported every day,” said EFM Director Dennis Ruh. The relevance of the topics discussed at the EFM Industry Sessions, such as artificial intelligence, resilience, archive production, developments in distribution and exploitation chains, was reflected in the highly-frequented Documentation Centre for Displacement, Expulsion, Reconciliation Berlin. New partner events such as AfroBerlin and the Entertainment Finance Forum were also fully utilized. The new Gropius Dome venue was used extensively for networking events, parties and lunches. Italy was this year’s “Country in Focus”. Italian filmmakers presented themselves at the Italian Pavilion and took the opportunity to find out about filmmaking and funding opportunities in Italy, and to find partners and network at discussions, pitches, talks and screenings or at the Berlinale Co-Production Market. A brand new report by Martin Kanzler on the structure and development of the European box office is out! Key findings include: 🔸 Among the 12 000 films released in Europe in 2022, fewer than 100 managed to sell more than one million tickets. 🔸 European films dominate the offering (68% of films released), US films dominate the box office (63% of admissions). 🔸 75% of admissions to European films are generated in national markets. 🔸 In 2022, the top 10 films accounted alone for 34% of total admissions (highest concentration level over the past decade). 𝗘𝗨𝗥𝗢𝗖𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗠𝗔 welcomes the announcement by the German Minister of Culture, Claudia Roth, of her plan to 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 system as part of the transposition of the AVMS directive, which includes an 𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗩𝗼𝗗 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, with 70% of this amount to be devoted to original German-language productions. Here are some interesting observations from Cannes: "the noticeable absence of US theatrical deals" "there has been a rise in worldwide rights deals, particularly with streaming platforms" "These deals are fostering new financing models and opportunities" It is clear that the industry is not going to return to pre-2020 deals for a very long time now ... and that producers need to pivot and adapt their finance models accordingly in order to 'win' in this current climate. The majority of pre-2020 models just simply aren't fit for purpose any more. So as long as producers continue to keep their heads buried in the sand and refuse to manage their expectations then they're most likely going to find it increasingly difficult to raise finance, because investors are wising up. https://lnkd.in/e69hqa_9
