I'm in Ljubljana (Slovenia) this week to attend the #ECSITE2024 conference with hundreds of other science communication professionals. On Saturday, Marianne Achiam, Tina Ibsen, Pedro Russo, and I will have a panel discussion to address some of the critical issues in astronomy and space technology - hierarchy, masculinity and colonisation - how these inequitable discourses shaping the fields and what can be done about it. https://lnkd.in/gmY3QtaD

📃Scientific paper: All People, One Sky: A Foundation for IAU CPS Community Engagement Abstract: This report first describes the status quo regarding the emerging deployment of very large groups of low-Earth-orbit satellites in the late 2010s, the concerns raised by the international astronomy community, and steps the community took to address the issue. We then describe the results of a series of four conferences held in 2020-21 that considered the impacts of large satellite constellations as it impacted a number of stakeholders, and how those outcomes resulted in the establishment of both the IAU Centre for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky from Satellite Constellation Interference (IAU CPS) and its Community Engagement (CE) Hub. We finish with a brief description of CE Hub's initial plans and activities, flowing from the recommendations of those conferences. ;Comment: 18 pages Continued on ES/IODE ➡️ https://etcse.fr/c91fU ------- If you find this interesting, feel free to follow, comment and share. New collaboration agreement in Chile! We are pleased to announce the signing of a cooperation agreement with the Center for Research, Technology, Education, and Astronomical Outreach (CITEVA) from Universidad de Antofagasta (UA). This partnership aims to bring our scientific communities closer and boost the development of astronomy in the Antofagasta region, in the north of Chile, where our Paranal Observatory and the ELT (under construction) are located. Key initiatives outlined in this agreement include exchange events for undergraduate and postgraduate academics and students. These events will provide opportunities for them to share their research with our scientific personnel at our offices in Santiago — a hub for scientific and administrative exchange between Chile and Europe. Additionally, technical meetings will be facilitated between ESO and CITEVA staff at our Paranal Observatory. These meetings will focus on addressing challenges faced by the Center in developing projects within the field of astro-engineering. The agreement was signed by Marcos Cikutovic Salas, Rector of Antofagasta University, and Luis Chavarría, ESO Representative in Chile. Five years ago to this day, #EUfunded researchers unveiled the first ever image of a black hole! This major achievement provided the first direct visual evidence of the existence of black holes, pushing the boundaries of modern science. The groundbreaking picture was generated by the Event Horizon Telescope, a global scientific collaboration involving European scientists. Combining radio telescopes around the world, the international team of astronomers succeeded in zooming into a supermassive #blackhole at the center of galaxy Messier 87. Read more 👉 europa.eu/!nC87U The ERC awarded 14 million euro in funding to the team of scientists involved in the underlying BlackHoleCam project: Profs Heino Falcke of Radboud University, Michael Kramer of the Max Planck Society and Luciano Rezzolla of the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt. When thinking about communication systems, one of the first components that comes to mind is an amplifier. But what exactly does an amplifier do? Simply put, an amplifier strengthens a weak communication signal, though this often comes at the cost of factors such as dynamic range, return loss, stability, or noise figure. Amplifiers play a crucial role in various fields, including earth science radiometry, transceivers, and radio astronomy. Visit our blog to learn more about the Design and Operation of Low Noise Amplifiers: https://t.ly/_Xags
