UK’s car to public charge point ratio worsens despite EV push 🇬🇧 Despite the nation's concerted efforts to promote electric vehicle (EV) adoption, recent analysis by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has revealed concerning trends in the accessibility of public charging infrastructure across the UK. According to data from the Department for Transport, every region in the UK has witnessed a worsening ratio of Charge Points to EVs, signaling potential challenges ahead. Particularly alarming are the disparities in regions like Northern Ireland, the South West, the South East, and the North West, where the ratio exceeds 100:1, raising questions about the country's readiness for the EV transition. The SMMT report also sheds light on the unequal distribution of public chargers, with Westminster alone boasting more charging points than major cities such as Liverpool, Leeds, and Manchester combined. This imbalance poses significant hurdles for both urban and rural residents, with the latter often lacking off-street parking and relying more heavily on public charging infrastructure. In response to these issues, the UK Government's Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy aims to deploy at least 300,000 public Charge Points by 2030. While progress has been made, with 50,000 Charge Points installed by November 2023, concerns persist regarding the pace of growth and the equitable distribution of charging infrastructure.

Following the publication of the Draft Rail Reform Bill, the Transport Committee met yesterday to discuss the use of data in improving the delivery of infrastructure, as well as improvements to rail lines. Issues such as responses to maintenance challenges can be solved quicker by using technology to monitor the condition of rail assets, whilst also addressing faults at an earlier stage. Alongside looking into the use of data to overcome challenges more effectively, the government has already been contributing to the development of digital twins, which will model transport networks around the country. https://lnkd.in/eP5rAUdM

We’re pleased to announce that we’ve been reappointed as a delivery partner to National Highways' Digital Lab following the delivery of c.£30m savings over three years. Since 2020, we’ve been supporting National Highways on its digital transformation by accelerating data-driven approaches across all directorates. Central to the partnership is the development of internal Decision Support Tools in areas such as maintenance and planning that move the organisation from reactive ways of working to predictive maintenance, improving efficiency, and saving money. Additionally, the reappointment will also see a focus on optimising performance of the Strategic Road Network, our critical national infrastructure, and improving safety, saving lives, supporting the UK’s economic engine, and achieving net zero targets. At the same time, many automakers are pulling back on the number of EVs they are producing because of a lack of infrastructure to support these cars. What are your thoughts? "MORPC has been awarded a $15-million grant from the Federal Highway Administration to expand #EVinfrastructure across central Ohio. The federal grant...will facilitate the expansion of #EVChargingStations at 62 locations across 13 counties with a focus on underserved urban and rural areas. The overall goal is to increase accessibility to charging stations, reduce carbon emissions, and support central Ohio's transition to #sustainabletransportation." #federalgrants #electricvehicles

THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION (4IR), INVESTING IN A NATIONAL INTERSTATE HIGH SPEED RAIL (NIHSR) SYSTEM IS CRUCIAL FOR MAINTAINING OUR NATION’S COMPETITIVENESS IN THE WORLD DURING THE 21st CENTURY. The advantages of integrating the existing Interstate Highway System with the High Speed Rail System, High Speed Internet and a new Electric Grid System dedicated to the HSR and Highway System Utilizing the existing median strip of an interstate highway for installing a High-Speed Rail (HSR) system offers several advantages: 1 of 2 1. Reduced Land Acquisition Costs: Utilizing the median strip minimizes the need for additional land acquisition, reducing project costs and potential conflicts with private property owners. 2. Optimized Space Usage: The median strip provides a pre-existing linear space, optimizing land use and avoiding the need for significant alterations to surrounding areas. 3. Enhanced Safety: Placement in the median strip can enhance safety by reducing the risk of collisions with other traffic, pedestrians, or structures. 4. Minimal Environmental Impact: Utilizing existing infrastructure minimizes the environmental footprint and disruption associated with new construction, preserving ecosystems and reducing habitat disruption. 5. Integrated Transportation Networks: HSR in the median can integrate seamlessly with existing transportation networks, facilitating convenient connections to other modes of transport such as buses, subways, or commuter rail. 6. Improved Accessibility: The central location of the median can enhance accessibility to HSR stations, making them more convenient for passengers and contributing to increased ridership. 7. Reduced Construction Time: Utilizing existing infrastructure can potentially reduce construction time compared to building entirely new rail corridors, accelerating the implementation of the HSR system. 8. Economic Benefits: Cost savings in land acquisition and construction can lead to more cost-effective projects, making HSR more financially viable and potentially attracting private investments. 9. Minimized Disruption to Communities: By using existing medians, disruptions to established communities are minimized, reducing potential negative impacts on residents and businesses. 10. Adaptive Reuse of Infrastructure: Reusing the median demonstrates an adaptive approach, making efficient use of existing public investments in interstate highway infrastructure. disappointing lack of mention for walking or cycling in these priorities. Maybe they are "greener transport" but i'd argue that is stretching the definition. Safe and equitable access to options for active travel are key to so much, from decarbonisation, to safe communities, access to opportunities & healthier kids. A sustainable future sits on a bedrock of active travel and public transport.

It's a very valid point. How can we expect to decarbonise the transport sector if there isn't the electric charging infrastructure to support it?
