#NewArticle Museographic narrating of dissonant heritage in Tianjin’s former international concessions Maria Gravari-Barbas, Sandra Guinand, Yue Lu & Chensi Shen Concessions—defined as the urban elements built by Western powers while ‘occupying’ various parts of the Chinese territory—have recently been granted heritage status by the Chinese national and local authorities. However, in many respects, they are ‘dissonant’ heritage sites since they are the result of the several-decade-long ‘colonial’ presence in Tianjin of nine foreign powers. Methods Talk - Episode 4: Decolonising Manchester Museum with Dr Njabu Chipangura 🎙️ Following on from our recent collaborative object-handling session at Manchester Museum with local African diaspora community groups, we spoke to Dr. Njabu Chipangura about this collaborative approach to re-imagining meanings and explored why such an approach to decolonisation is important. Njabulo is the Museum’s Curator of Living Cultures. He is responsible for the care of more than 25,000 objects from different parts of the world and his work includes building active collaborative provenance research with diaspora and descendant communities.

Museums today are at a critical threshold between being static repositories and becoming experiential and inspirational places for regenerative cultures. In a world that suffers a lack of alternative realities and possible futures in the face of multiplying and intensifying crises, museums can play a key role as laboratories for more dynamic ways of being, belonging, and cherishing beauty. As repositories of history, arts, and culture, museums are already telling stories about who we are, how we look at the world, and what we could become. Recent guidance from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport advises institutions, such as museums and heritage organisations, to take a “retain and explain” approach to any contested heritage in their custody. "Contested heritage" refers to historical or cultural artifacts, sites, or practices that are subject to debate, disagreement, or controversy due to differing interpretations, perspectives, or interests. The overarching message of the guidance encourages cultural institutions to continue displaying contested heritage, allowing for continued study and engagement with complex historical narratives. This retention creates the need for explanation, the importance of offering transparent and comprehensive information about the origins, significance, and contested aspects of the heritage in question. #AnEntangledPastandPresentBritishandDutchHistoriesandLegaciesofSlavery The transatlantic slave trade pushed millions of people into enslavement across the Atlantic, with European powers both competing and collaborating to maximise benefits. These events shaped our current day societies and resulted in deeply rooted connections between European nations. Yet, when we explore this history in museums or educational institutions, we often still view it from a national perspective rather than recognising it as an interconnected transnational system. How might we better grasp these connections? Doesn’t it make sense to work together internationally to understand the ways this past still shapes societies and lives around the world today? And when these connections enter the museum space, how can this history be represented and understood by visitors? These questions were discussed during the international symposium 'An Entangled Past and Present: British and Dutch Histories and Legacies of Slavery', organised by #NationalMuseumsLiverpool, the #DutchEmbassy in the UK, the #NationalSlaveryMuseumoftheNetherlands, the #CulturalHeritageAgencyoftheNetherlands and the #TransatlanticSlaveryLegaciesinMuseumsForum. I was happy to be part of one of the panel discussions and share some of the outcomes of my research #APostcolonialMuseum? geared towards the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool. My exploration showed a necessity to encircle the trauma of slavery and colonialism in museum representation to enrich the national narrative, and to steer an emotional and cognitive understanding that leads to a more engaging, inclusive visitor experience.
