📢 Hosting an event or transforming a city? Can you do one without the other? 🌆 Cities can spend billions on the staging of a global event and we can probably all think of examples of where this has been worthwhile and where it simply has not. Quite rightly, those which have not transformed a city through improved facilities, infrastructure and accessibility have served as examples for others to learn from. 🎆 People who are local to host cities and countries want to see benefit from such events and they want to know that these benefits stand the test of time and don't dwindle when the lights go out at the closing ceremony. Having worked on some of the largest sports events in the world our Global Host Cities and Venues Director, James Hamilton MRICS has some thoughts to share on the formula for success and how we at Turner & Townsend can implement it. Hosting major global events: how to achieve a lasting legacy 👇 👇 👇
How to navigate the constraints and complexities of hosting major global events 👇 Major events have been around for a long while, but only recently has the emphasis shifted from hosting to using the event as a platform for accelerating regeneration and creating a positive legacy for the host city and its people. This now means, when hosting, there is greater demand on a city’s ability to efficiently transport large numbers of people, which has, in turn, created some of the most complex programmes of work ever experienced. Granted, most host cities are given six to eight years to plan and deliver a major event, but this only leaves organisers more susceptible to market fluctuations, political upheaval and unforeseen events. Our Director of Global Host Cities and Sports Venues, James Hamilton, shares some approaches that can be taken to mitigate the impact of the various complexities and constraints that may emerge, and aid organisers in working efficiently towards the finish line. This strategic shift, initiated in the early '90s and highlighted by hosting FIFA World Cup matches in 1994, has not only enriched Orlando's sporting culture but also significantly contributed to its economic development. 🏗️ Investments in infrastructure, like the 220-acre ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and the extensive expansions of the Orange County Convention Center and Camping World Stadium, underscore Orlando's commitment to becoming a premier event destination. This development has catalyzed a thriving market for rental property investors, driven by an ever-growing demand for accommodations tied to the city's bustling event calendar. 📊 The economic impact is palpable, with events like the AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships injecting $256 million into the local economy. Garry Walmsley, Senior Global Real Estate Advisor at Buy Orlando Villas, points out the immense investment potential in Orlando's rental market, fueled by the city's dynamic growth and year-round tourism. 🔑 Investment Insight: Orlando offers a unique opportunity for real estate investors to leverage the city's status as a top-tier destination for sports and events. With professional guidance, investors can navigate this burgeoning market to find lucrative investment avenues, from short-term rentals catering to tourists and event-goers to long-term investments in one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S. As Orlando continues to flourish, now is the opportune moment to explore investment in a city that stands at the intersection of sporting excellence and vibrant economic growth. #OrlandoInvestment #EconomicDevelopment #RealEstateOpportunities #SportsTourism #EventHosting #ProfessionalGrowth #OrlandoRealEstate
