An expansive law that will possibly “set a new standard globally,” the European Union's AI Act rolls out over the next 36 months, with the first major compliance deadline expected at the end of December 2024. Partners Robert Spano (London and Paris) and Joel Harrison (London) spoke to Law360 about the statute, its potential impact outside the EU, and how international corporations can assess risks and create internal governance structures to comply with the regulatory requirements. #AI #AIAct #EuropeanUnion

This week the European Parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) and Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) committees voted in favour of the provisional agreement on the Artificial Intelligence Act. The regulation aims to: ➡️ Establish obligations for AI based on potential risks and impact levels ➡️ Protect fundamental rights, democracy and the rule of law from high-risk AI systems ➡️ Ensure regulatory sandboxes and real-world testing at national level The AI Act awaits adoption in an upcoming European Parliament plenary session and adoption by the Council of the EU. https://bit.ly/4bzzKpf #EU #digitalization #digitaltransformation

Curious to get informed takes on the EU AI Act, and particularly whether policy-adjacent colleagues in Asia see it as a net benefit? Once again, the "Brussels Effect" is likely to be, errr, in effect…. Expect other jurisdictions to adopt elements – or a wholecloth version of the Act – for their own. Since 2018, GDPR’s implementation undoubtedly helped elevate privacy and data protection to the C-suite; and accelerated global legal and regulatory developments in the same realm – mostly, thought not entirely, to laudable ends. But the Brussels Effect comes with EU-tinted glasses, and does not necessarily fit the prerogative of all growing economies. As for the EU AI Act, the MIT Technology Review says it positions the EU to become “the world’s AI police.” Other experts I follow have posited it is "trying to regulate an industry that doesn’t even really exist yet," and that "once again, the EU will legislate itself into technological irrelevance." What do you think? #euaiact #artificialintelligence #publicpolicy

“The United Nations on Thursday adopted a U.S.-led resolution on artificial intelligence, marking what Washington says is a major step toward establishing a global baseline to regulate the rapidly developing technology. The resolution, which followed more than three months of negotiations among dozens of countries, calls on U.N. member states to ensure “safe, secure, and trustworthy AI systems” that are developed responsibly and respect human rights and international law. #trendingonlinkedin #trendingnow #aiadoption #trustworthyai #artificialintelligence #responsibleai https://lnkd.in/ediEh4d9
