It was such an honor to join Aaron Dante and his co-host Beth Anne Dorman for this timely and important discussion about the need to increase access to mental and behavioral health services. At CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, we recently granted nearly $10 million to community-based mental and behavioral health organizations serving youth across the region, and expanded our partnership with tech-enabled providers like Headway to help reduce wait times and improve patient access to providers. And for many of us the need is only growing more critical with each passing day. According to a recent report from the U.S. Surgeon General, research covering 80,000 youth globally found that depressive and anxiety symptoms doubled during the pandemic, with 25 percent of youth experiencing depressive symptoms and 20 percent experiencing anxiety symptoms. And a separate report on workplace mental health and wellbeing found that 76 percent of workers reported at least one symptom of a mental health condition. As I shared in the discussion with Aaron and Beth, when someone is in need, reducing their wait to see a healthcare professional is critical. We must move with the speed required to meet them as they move through time and circumstance.

Creating a Safe Space with Hannah from ThriveWithHannah I recently spoke with Hannah from ThriveWithHannah, a passionate advocate for mental health and community support. Hannah's mission was to create a safe space for those in her community who needed help. She found that social media, with its constant noise and superficial interactions, wasn't that safe space. The environment was too chaotic for meaningful and supportive engagement. That’s where WithMe made a difference. WithMe provided Hannah with a platform to build a secure, dedicated community space. She could offer exclusive content, host live support sessions, and engage directly with her members in a controlled, nurturing environment. This safe space allowed her community to share their struggles and triumphs openly, fostering genuine connections and providing the support they needed. Hannah’s journey is a powerful reminder that while social media has its place, sometimes you need a dedicated space to truly connect and support your community. June is Men's Health Awareness Month! This month, we're shining a light on the importance of mental health, especially for Black men. Black men face unique challenges when it comes to mental wellness, from stigma and lack of culturally competent care to systemic barriers. It's time to break the silence, support one another, and promote healing within our community. In communities like Oakland, Black men face unique challenges that can contribute to higher rates of mental health issues.
