ATAIN - The acronym for Avoidable Term Admissions Into Neonatal Units. Improving the safety of maternity services is a key priority for the NHS and reducing admission of full-term babies to neonatal care is an indicator in the NHS Outcomes Framework for 2016 to 2017. Michele Upton - Head of Maternity and Neonatal Transformation Programmes at NHS Improvement presented her insights into ATAIN and 4 reasons why minimising separation is important; 👉🏽The first hour of life following birth is a once-in-a-lifetime experience – not replicable - to be protected. 👉🏽Mothers and babies have a physiological and emotional need to be together: hours and days following birth. 👉🏽Important for physiological stability of baby and initiation of maternal infant interaction. 👉🏽There is overwhelming evidence that separation of mother and baby so soon after birth interrupts the normal bonding process, which can have a profound and lasting effect on maternal mental health, breastfeeding, long-term morbidity for mother and child. This makes preventing separation, except for compelling medical reasons, an essential practice in maternity services and an ethical responsibility for healthcare professionals. Our flagship product, the mOm Essential Incubator, is a portable, compact, and lightweight infant incubator offering a safe thermoregulated environment for newborns to thrive in. We deliver simple, effective, and reliable technology solutions that can operate anywhere from remote & rural birth, intra-hospital transport, and transitional care through to neonatal units across the spectrum of designation and capability. Happy Mother's Day! 💐 Being a mother is the greatest gift, but having a baby isn’t always plain sailing. Births can bring challenges for both mother and baby - that’s why HIWM is involved in the Maternity and Neonatal Safety Improvement Programme, led by NHS England 🍼 The programme aims to: 👉 Reduce the rates of maternal and neonatal deaths, stillbirths, and brain injuries that occur during or soon after birth by 50% by 2025. 👉 Set out safer maternity care, reducing the national rate of preterm births from 8% to 6%. 👉 Reduce unwarranted variation in maternal and neonatal care, providing a high-quality healthcare experience for all women, babies, and families. Between 2022 and 2023, 65 Maternity and Neonatal optimisations were adopted by West Midland trusts ✅ Learn more about the programme here https://lnkd.in/eYmaY8F7 #MothersDay #Maternity #NeonatalSafety #MaternityCare #HealthcareInnovation #HealthcareIndustry

📢 "Nothing's Changed": A Call for Urgent Action Reflecting on the recent reports by Sands - baby loss charity, Tommy's, and The Royal College of Midwives (RCM), it’s clear that the state of maternity and neonatal care in the UK hasn’t significantly shifted in the positive direction and still demands improvement. 👉 We cannot ignore that 13 babies die daily in the UK due to pregnancy and neonatal complications. The fact that Black babies are over twice as likely to be stillborn compared to white babies and that babies in deprived areas face double the risk is unacceptable. These figures underscore the deep-rooted ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in our healthcare system. 👉 The reports reveal nearly half of maternity services in England are rated as “inadequate” or “requires improvement” by the CQC. Reproductive health receives a mere 2% of public and charity health-related research funding. This severe underinvestment highlights a systemic disregard for maternal and neonatal health, with stillbirth and neonatal mortality rates stagnating, far from the 2025 targets. 👉 Addressing these issues requires more than just incremental changes. We need a bold, national strategy that extends beyond 2025. This strategy must: 1️⃣Renew Commitment: Expand national maternity safety goals to tackle inequalities. 2️⃣Increase Funding: Secure sustained financial support for transformative improvements. 3️⃣Enhance Staffing: Develop robust retention strategies and improve staffing levels across all maternity and neonatal services. Last month, The Royal College of Midwives launched a short guidebook on assessing social complexities during maternity care, known as the Maternity Disadvantage Assessment Tool (MatDAT), which will support midwives in their delivery of care. Read the full Saving Babies’ Lives 2024 Report 👉 https://bit.ly/45AUomp Read about the Maternity Disadvantage Assessment Tool 👉 https://bit.ly/4biErSM In the spirit of one of our favourite poems, Tatamkhulu Afrika’s ‘Nothing’s Changed’, we reflect on the unchanged state of maternity and neonatal care in the UK. This urgent need requires the continued account of patients’ experiences, community around maternal health innovation and Systems Change. #SavingBabiesLives #MaternityCare #Innovation #HealthcareInequality #Ellescope

Former Medical director of Well Med/OPTUM, Peoples health, Med Solutions, Coventry/Aetna, Kaiser Permanente, Cigna health care Health care
It has been in works long time in FL started with birthing centers, along with midwives in close proximity of hospitals, but never took off as made like personalized birthing as home. I am sure this was created more financially to satisfy payor than members, obviously increasing safety concerns. This isn't going to be any different than birthing centers, now designated as 'advanced birth centers'. The volume will dictate cost leverage, which in turn depends on regulatory staffing requirements, most of all the popularity and the acceptance. With increasing safety concern and malpractice heavy state like FL, I do not see it be a win win for members or payors. Moreover, this will be an extension of hospitals, like all out of hospitals services, real acceptance will depend on members comfort regarding safety, which will be the real indicator of success of this program, if any. Even though I am great proponents of out of hospital services, but not sure of this service where life of mother and child is at risk every step of the way.

Every year, at least 40 million women and birthing people around the world experience long-term complications following labor and childbirth and what’s more is that these complications are often avoidable. Last week, I had the privilege of leading a convening hosted by the Institute for Policy Solutions at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing called Strengthening Maternal and Child Health: Redefining and Reimagining Postpartum Care. It was heartening to be surrounded by experts from around the world to begin to conceptualize a plan for addressing women and birthing people’s ongoing care needs beyond the traditional six-week period. The consensus is clear: there are significant gaps in addressing the ongoing care needs of women and birthing people worldwide in the first year after birth. The convening also revealed that there is a large community of support for alleviating these persistent health inequities and enhancing maternal well-being. We had incredible facilitation by midwife Amy MacDonald, CNM, MSN, FACNM, a key note to set the stage by midwife Nafisa Jiddawi and representation from World Health Organization UNICEF United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) American College of Nurse-Midwives American Academy of Pediatrics Pan American Health Organization Jhpiego COUNCIL OF INTERNATIONAL NEONATAL NURSES INC Postpartum Support International USAID ICN-International Council of Nurses Group Care Global Pomelo Care Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). University Hospital has been named to Newsweek’s list of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals 2024. The award list was announced on May 8, 2024, and can be viewed on Newsweek.com. High-quality maternity care, provided from pregnancy through birth and postpartum is key to the long-term health of newborns and women who give birth. Given that maternity care is a major component of health care, Newsweek and Statista, a leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider, have partnered for the third time to identify America’s Best Maternity Hospitals in 2024. The ranking is based on three pillars: • Nationwide Online Survey: Health care professionals and hospital managers with knowledge about maternity processes, such as neonatal and perinatal doctors, nurses, and midwives, were asked to recommend leading maternity hospitals in the United States. • Patient Experience Survey: Survey of the overall patient experience in the hospital. • Hospital Quality Metrics: Indicators relevant to maternity care were considered. Based on the results of the study, University Hospital is proud to be recognized on Newsweek’s list of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals 2024! #bestmaternityhospital #maternity
