We've replaced big parts of our recommendation engine in favor of LLM models. File this post under the trendy question of "How can publishers benefit from LLMs/chatGPT?") Our video content selection/matching engine was great when measured across all publishers but not not great when examining a specific publisher. Average is average. We looked for a solution that will serve an individual publisher AS IF our entire engine was trained and built for them. Such a model will need to: 1. Avoid/Find and alternative to dedicated taxonomies / Keywords maps. 2. Flexibility - Enable a non techy to instruct and change the model behavior (Prompting!). 3. Avoid current LLM limitations - Qualitative data, Response time, Output validations, etc. There weren't best practices on how to use LLMs that aligned with our goals. It took a lot of creativity on finding the right ways to integrate LLMs in a large scale production system, and how to leverage the ability to interact with the model (prompting) from both a technical perspective and human perspective. Performance compared to the old model were measured by comparing qualitative KPIs (~40%! improvement) and by editorial teams across the design partners! Many LLM/"chatGP" use cases today are around the generative/conversational aspects, there is not enough attention on how to leverage LLMs for semantic analysis, sentiment, taxonomies, decision making, and human lead processes. Big thanks to our design partners that said "yes" and specifically to Advance Local and Grant Whitmore for being bold and innovative. We have several experimental projects and are open to collaborating with others on them, publishers and tech companies.

Content licensing deals (theoretically) protect the integrity of the publisher's work. Pulling award-winning stories and investigations together is massively expensive and time-consuming. It's damaging to publishers' value and credibility to use high-level journalism without a capable citation experience. These deals need a strong foundation to be beneficial in the long term.
