🙌 Lovely to be part of Ben's weekly review, and was wonderful to hear about the work he/Lincoln Arts Centre are doing. 🙌 --------I will caveat the below by saying that Ben is a pal of mine from his In Good Co days, so yes potential for bias, but I very much stand by it-------------- So... I'm a vocal bugger at points and do call out bad practice when I see it, which often makes people feel rather 😦, however I do also get vocal when I see good practice 😁. For other Creative Director pals, particularly of buildings, I do think Ben and his team are ones to look towards in regards of the care and transparency they're establishing with artists. I feel like... he/they gets it. 💻 💻 💻 A few very simple things Lincoln Arts Centre have done on their website 💻 💻 💻: 👉 They have properly consulted with artists to develop their web transparency. [Easy start] 👉 They have a tab at the very top of their website entitled Create With Us (https://lnkd.in/eXpeXvBq) meaning that artists/creatives know exactly where to go. 👍 👍 👍 👉 'The process', present on their website, that they've established is super clear for artists. "We're Open To Ideas": (https://lnkd.in/e4BZ_wNr) - saves artists bugging you with things that aren't quite relevant too. 👉 Their webpage includes an open Artistic Policy (https://bit.ly/425xFge) - actual 'Transparency'. 👉 Their site also has all of their team members WITH contact details. (https://lnkd.in/efdc_tZV) making it easier to navigate the org. 👉 Their Vision, Aims, Goals, Core Values are on one handy page giving you an insight as to how you fit within that vision. ((https://lnkd.in/eFqzfcXS)) All. Useful. In the meeting Ben was also *actually transparent*. Normally when I head into meetings I get things like "...to be completely transparent with you" etc and then get presented with the muddiest of muddy waters that offer no transparency. Ben however briefly talked me through the structures of funding/working with his org and where different opportunities/problems lay in their calendar. All useful to know. 👏 All I'll leave it with for LAC is bravo Ben and team, and for other orgs; Lincoln Arts Centre may be a place to look towards for good practice working with artists. Even if only for your website/shared info as a start. 👏
This week has left me feeling energised, creative and with an urgency to get active to face the opportunities and inevitable challenges of 2024. 💪🏼 🔬 Put some more ideas down with Paula Atkins for a STEM Festival at the arts centre including Maths Inspiration to get young people inspired by science, technology, engineering and maths from a young age. 💡 Lots of Innovate Artists cohort mentoring with Mishap Theatre, Under the Bed Theatre and Mouth House to hear about their plans [Hannah Peacock, Caley Starbuck, Annis McGee]. As well as generally chatting to artists about their plans including Paul O'Donnell about Museum of Me, and Alexander Millington about their plans for Split Infinitive. ↗ Got organised with Clare Edwards, Sally Denton, Sukhy Johal MBE Molly Jackson, Nick Jones and Anna Scott to set an agenda for all things the Centre for Culture and Creativity in 2024. 🌈 University EDI committee meeting. 👩🏼💼 Met Natalie Wilmot the new dean of Lincoln's International Business School to talk accelerator and business development programmes for the creative industries. ❗ Touched based with Edward Boott and Nonsuch Studios ahead of Don't Panic! a participatory arts project taking place across campus in March 🤖 Met Marc Hanheide as we embark on the Coronation Challenge to discover new ways technology can play a role in the creative industries - having been nominated as part of University of Lincoln Queen’s Anniversary Prize – UK’s Highest National Honour for Universities. 🎵 Young people from Lincolnshire secondary schools took over the building on Thursday to create their very own music showcase. Kudos to Adam Jolivel-Perkins who facilitated young people to take the lead. 🔥 Associate Artists, Zest Theatre, completed their second and final week with us before Camp Phoenix takes to the stage. 🚌 Met with theatre companies who were shortlisted for the In Good Company touring bursary. All of whom were brilliant, resilient and excellent. Tough decisions ahead. 🎨 Put some plans in place for Lincolnshire Open Art Exhibition. 🎤 ...and finally hosted Demo, where three new creative works demoed in front of an audience for the very first time. A perfect end to, what has been, a very busy week.

INSPIRING CONNECTIONS: Highlights from the STEM Educators Expo 2024 On July 1st, we hosted our first STEM Educators Expo, connecting primary school educators with STEM outreach providers and professionals. The event fostered valuable connections, with educators discovering innovative classroom resources and potential partnerships with STEM industry leaders, including Nanogirl Labs Ltd, Watercare Services Limited, Auckland University of Technology, The University of Auckland, House of Science NZ, Royal Society Te Apārangi, GNS Science and others! The majority of attendees found the networking opportunities to be valuable, and they appreciated that exhibitors weren't just out to sell their wares but rather to make genuine connections. Measuring success in academics often feels like navigating a labyrinth with constantly shifting paths. It’s tempting to equate success with grades, awards, or prestigious institutions, but it’s essential to remember that these markers are only part of a larger picture. True academic success encompasses much more than just numerical scores or accolades. It involves growth, curiosity, and resilience. It's about the journey of learning itself, and how it shapes us all. Initially intrigued by the idea of detecting seizures, Naya shifted her focus to stroke detection, influenced by her grandmother's experience with stroke. The watch, named WingItt, identifies potential strokes by monitoring nerve impulses and heartbeats, targeting adults over 55, a demographic more prone to strokes. Naya aims to make her lifesaving device affordable, distinguishing it from costly health-monitoring technology."
I am inspired by this story about Naya Ellis, a 14-year-old who has invented a watch that can detect early signs of a stroke. Naya’s journey began with her involvement in STEM NOLA, a program dedicated to providing K-12 students with hands-on #STEM education. Through this program, Naya developed her invention, coined WingItt, which monitors heartbeat and nerve impulses to identify potential stroke symptoms before they become critical. Naya was inspired to create the device after witnessing the impact of health issues within her own family. With her invention, Naya was crowned champion of the National STEM Challenge, a prestigious competition with just 126 students selected from over 2,500 participants nationwide. I hope that Naya will achieve her goal of making the technology affordable and accessible, particularly for older adults. Her passion and commitment, which we share, are truly a testament to the power of #education and #innovation.
