Last week the Telegraph ran not one but two sanctimonious puff pieces bemoaning that charity shops are not the bargain hunters paradise that they used to be. Apparently certain fashion items can be bought more cheaply elsewhere. The moral indignation that this is depriving 'low income people' of affordable clothes barely disguises the sense of injustice and middle class anguish of having to pay market rates for vintage clobber. Leaving aside the obvious point that charity shops are fundraising engines the sole purpose of which is to convert donated items into as much cash as possible for the charitable cause in question, the implicit - and all too familiar - complaint here is that charities should not behave like a business. There is a baked in expectation that charities should do everything on the cheap or, better still, for nothing at all. Salaries should be discounted, services should be subsidised and the cost of delivery, non-existant. Meanwhile, in the post Covid cost of living crisis economy, demands placed on charities grow exponentially. At the end of last year NCVO reported that the majority of charities are being forced to bridge the gap in underfunded public service provision from their own resources, in other words, the money made from the ringing tills of charity shops. While #Thanksgiving, #BlackFriday and #CyberMonday are typically associated with consumption, the long weekend concludes with a day dedicated to giving back. Eleven years ago, the 92nd Street Y and United Nations Peace Foundation announced #GivingTuesday, a day encouraging consumers to #donate to philanthropic causes. And with more than half of consumers willing to pay more for products from brands that are committed to social impact, #brands immediately joined in on the fun and began donating portions of proceeds towards charitable organizations. Online grocer, Instacart partnered with leading CPG companies Keurig Dr Pepper Inc., Dole Food Company and OLIPOP PBC for a commitment to donate one serving of fruits and vegetables (up to a collective total of 1 million servings) for every dollar spent to #PartnershipForAHealthierAmerica. Activewear brand Vuori partnered with charity: water to donate $1 from every sale. Each donation equates to 1,100 liters of clean drinking water and the brand has committed to a minimum donation of $10,000. JD Beauty Group / Wet Brush collaborated with Newman's Own, Inc. to create a limited edition detangling brush featuring the iconic actor’s image on the package. 100% of the profits from will be donated to Newman’s Own Foundation, which will grant the funds to organizations such as SeriousFun Children's Network. With socks being one of the most requested items of need from the homeless, Hanesbrands Inc. heeded the call to action and donated one pair of socks for every purchase made through it’s website. Finally, because animals need care too, for every purchase made in the month of December, online pet retailer Chewy will donate up to $1 million in pet food and supplies to #GreaterGoodCharities. Chewy’s site also features a wish list feature for shelters and rescue centers, allowing consumers to donate directly thought their platform. When the pictures and messages started to roll in last Tuesday, while I was away, sunning it up in Cairns, there was certainly some disappointment at missing out on this BBQ. These are really useful in the cattery and kennels (as modelled by Parsley looking cosy with his donated blankets here). We can’t take duvets or pillows sorry, they're tricky to wash and get messy if ripped. • Office items. If you run an office or business printer, you can have a collection box from #RecycleForCharity which donates to us for every recycled cartridge. And if you are having an office clear out, take a look at #AGoodThingUK who match businesses with equipment to charities who can claim it. • Pre-loved clothes and accessories. Perhaps you’ve grown out of it, or out of love with it, but you think someone else would wear it? Then either drop it in to one of our five Charity Shops, or add onto eBay as a charity listing. • Pet items. We welcome new and nearly-new pet items. Things that would be useful include dog harnesses, pet beds and blankets, cat scratching posts, toys and coats.
