SCOUT started its journey: loaded onto 4 trucks, it first goes to the east, where the individual parts are welded together to one tank. SCOUT then returns to MT Aerospace for its final assembly and acceptance tests before continuing its journey to Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. in Trauen. There, SCOUT is put through its paces at #cryogenic temperatures using liquid #hydrogen and nitrogen.   SCOUT, an European Space Agency - ESA project, is a cryogenic tank demonstrator and the abbreviation for Sandwich Common Bulkhead Optimized Upper Stage Tank. The sandwich common bulkhead manufactured by MT Aerospace are used to separate the two tank volumes for LOX and LH2 and also to keep the different temperatures of the two elements in the respective tank section constant. In addition, thanks to cost-efficient manufacturing technology, this bulkhead makes it possible to meet the high-performance requirements of cryogenic upper stages while saving weight, as no extra structure is required between the two tank sections.   #rocketscience #spaceEnablers #lightweight #hightechnology #highperformance

We had the incredible opportunity to explore the testing facilities at the Institute for Space Systems (IRS) at the University of Stuttgart, where our SUPREME thruster will undergo testing. Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/e7fqsHDv Testing SUPREME at IRS's facilities poses several integrative and engineering challenges. At the core of our thruster lies the plasma generation and control. To understand plasma behavior and characterize the thruster performance, we have to integrate plasma diagnostics into the vacuum chamber. The magnetic field, generated by a high-temperature superconducting magnet, operates at extremely low temperatures, necessitating precise cooling to maintain its superconducting state. Additionally, adapting the existing testing infrastructure to accommodate the unique requirements of an HTS-based thruster, including cryogenic infrastructure, power delivery, and thermal management, poses further challenges. Ensuring the structural integrity of mounting structures is essential to mitigating risks and ensuring safe and reliable testing operations. The consortium is working on overcoming all these challenges to test and validate the simulations done! A huge thank you to IRS for hosting us and showcasing their exceptional facilities. Additionally, our work on the SpIRIT satellite, Australia's first scientific satellite in two decades, highlights our advanced heat management capabilities. By applying pure copper directly to the satellite body, SpIRIT is equipped with a thermal system that's usually only feasible for larger satellites. Though, it's not just space. This looks spectacular but is actually the opposite of what we wanted to see here. The picture shows one of the pyro-valves of our rocket development project “SR Dorado”. In particular, it is one of the pressurization valves which control the flow of Helium into the tanks of the rocket to pressurize the propellants. It is being developed by one of our members based on an old soviet design for a fire suppression system. Testing showed us a minor (and very fixable) problem with the design as it stands: The sealant of the pyrotechnic actuator was not strong enough to contain the pressure generated by the pyro charge, blasting all the actuation gases - and a lot of sparks - out the back of the valve instead of actuating the piston of the valve. We think this is a perfect example of why verification and testing, especially of custom parts, is such an important step in engineering. Now we have the necessary information to refine the design and fix the issue before we conduct the next tests. We want to let you take part in all the ups and downs of our projects, not just the flashy success stories but also the problems we face – and they can be just as flashy!
