It's not always about reinventing. Often we can build on the great work of others to move forward. I was getting all set to write a summary post from my participation at last week's Tech Thursday event, when I came across this brilliant post below. Well done Bashir Mustapha. It sure tops anything I would have put together! Great video work! This was indeed a great evening: an excellent turnout and a dynamic crowd of entrepreneurs and tech professionals. As I move forward to build the organization BizforClimate it is incredibly helpful to learn from established #founders on the trials and tribulations of building their businesses. A key message: let's not be afraid to fail. Another key lesson: the importance of having the support of our partners, families, and friends, and to that end, I am incredibly blessed and grateful to have so much support around me in this venture. Phase transitions are always a mess. Lean into them. When viewed from the outside, it is easy to believe that startups grow smoothly in a single phase, from the founding moment to the billion-dollar exit. Why, then, do founders find themselves in periods leading companies that feel broken, almost embarrassed to let the outside world see the chaos inside? I think, because it is quite normal. Rob Newman helped the Main Sequence portfolio understand this at our annual portfolio day last year by telling us about his journey, growing and selling Nearmap for over $1 billion. As the company grew, it needed to take on new shapes, run different processes, hire different people, launch new products. Each new phase led the company into a messy transition. The sheer normality of the mess resonated with me. Of course it is messy. Don't resist the mess if there needs to be a phase transition to go to the next level. As a CEO and sportsman, Rob understood the value of coaching and hired a new coach for himself each time the company took on a new form. When plunging into the chaos of change, it is good to know you are equipped to crawl out the other side. But, resist the mess and we resist the shift. We took a deep dive into Chapter 6,7 and 8 Chapter highlights. Chapter 6: You Are Not a Lottery Ticket Some people believe success is as a result of lots of luck. However, the greatest thinkers believe it is the outcome of hard work. If you are an infite optimistic you will lean more towards luck. If you are definite optimist you will believe in putting in the hard work. If you are part of T#_378, you will conclude it is a blend of both hard work and lots of luck. Only 20% of startups will control 80% of thr market. A venture investor should pick a company with the potential of exponential growth and stick with it long enough before cashing in. You might own 100% of your very own startup, but there’s a big danger that you’ll end up owning 100% of nothing. It would be much better to own 0.01% of a company like Google. However, the lingering question was how practical is this principle in this side of the word. What major problems remain unsolved whose solutions that have potential of exponential growth. If you learn a secret, be careful who you share it with. As a rule of thumb, it’s best not to share secrets with anyone except for those you need to tell. Consider this in your business model or technology. ⭐️6. Product-market fit. Does it meet market needs in terms of sales, contracts, and pre-contracts? Does your audience genuinely need what you produce? ⭐️7. Go-to-market strategy. Do you precisely understand your step-by-step plan? ⭐️8. Team potential. Working with a highly qualified team is crucial. VC analysts will assess the core competence of team members. ⭐️9. Social impact. It's crucial that your startup can make a difference, and as a founder, you are a mission-driven person. This is the only way to revolutionize the industry. ⭐️10. Underdog spirit. We believe true underdogs are those who've faced struggles, learned the hard way, and possess the resilience to overcome challenges. These qualities equip them to rise to the top and become the future of humanity. All applications that had proved to fit formal requirements undergo review by three VC analysts, who then provide feedback on pitch deck strengths and suggest areas for improvement.
