Journey of a Planning Engineer A few years ago, one of my friend approached me and said that he wanted to switch to Project Controls. Until that time, he had worked for almost 10 years in manufacturing companies in various roles such procurement, business development and maintenance, but had no experience in project planning and controls. Looking at his CV, it seemed difficult for him to land any role in Engineering and Construction projects let alone in Project Controls, but he was very determined to move into PC. So we started working on his profile and target opportunities. Although he did not have hands on experience, he did have a plan for the transition for quite some time. - Having worked with equipment manufacturers, he was partly involved with project deliveries which enabled him to understand how the different pieces fit into each other. - He engaged in keen observations of the interactions between project stakeholders and understanding the critical factors that drive the project execution. - He interacted with clients, consultants and contractors whenever there was an opportunity, asked them queries and gained knowledge - He helped him team voluntarily involving in tasks which brought him closer to planning activities. - He did his own self study about EPC projects, learnt project schedules, execution plans and PC documents whatever he could access. As expected, it was difficult for him to get a good break. But he kept trying even for junior and site-based roles. Eventually an opportunity came up in an organization which was known for its notorious treatment of employees. Despite my caution, he went ahead and accepted the job of a planning engineer in that organization ready to face any challenges. He struggled a lot during that period right from being denied holidays, increments, insane working hours, to being mistreated by employees. But he stuck to his objective and gained the experience he wanted. It boosted his skills as well as his confidence. Today he is working as a Planning Manager in a reputed global Engineering and Project management consultancy. Do share your thoughts... #projectcontrols #projectplanning
