Congrats to our friend Rocket on his Ted Talk "Vermont: The Value of Hardship" for TEDx Hartland Hill's series, The Art of Living! What a refreshing take on the inherent BENEFITS of hardship: innovation, accountability, and cooperation - these are KEY qualities of Vermont living! Here at BRIC in Springfield, we're acutely and continuously aware of the myriad of challenges that rural life presents in the face of our community development efforts. If we're being honest, the list of obstacles and setbacks we encounter day to day often feels endless - like pushing a boulder up hill (both ways!) in the snow. Anyone boots on the ground doing this type of work knows it's not for the faint of heart, and in fact we often joke that you have to be a certain sort of glutton for punishment in order to ever actually make any progress. We know what we're doing is difficult, and that we're pushing against the odds with the things we're trying to accomplish - and somehow this awareness actually BOLSTERS our determination. The spirit of resilience and ingenuity is STRONG in Vermont. It's an inherent part of our identity. Whether it's snowstorms, early frosts, catastrophic flooding, workforce and housing shortages, food insecurity, busted leaking pipes - whatever the hurdle, Vermonters SHOW UP. We imagine possibilities, we work together, and we GET SHIT DONE. In spite of the challenges, there's nowhere we'd rather be! We believe in the power of our communities, we root for the underdog, and we WILL prevail. Thanks for the food for thought, Rocket! And for all that you're doing to help affect positive change here in Vermont! Housing is a perfectly fine investment even when prices/rents aren't increasing, https://lnkd.in/gWe3s7i3 This is because asset prices are based on the net expected value of future cash flow (or expected value of avoided rents), and they adjust to that expected value of future cash flow. Markets where rents are expected to increase see prices well above what makes sense based on current rents and that upfront negative cash flow is balanced by the appreciation caused by increasing rents. "Treating something as an investment" doesn't magically make its price go up. Restricting the ability to increase quantity supplied in response to increases in demand does though. This diversion against "financialization" is misguided. If Coca-Cola stockholders managed to get all other soda producers outlawed we wouldn't be talking about how treating stocks as an investment was the cause of "unaffordable soda".

The research is clear: mixed-income housing is key to upLifting Orlando. 📊 70% of young adult Americans said that it was harder for them to afford a home than it was for their parents’ generation. In October 2021, about half of Americans (49%) said this was a major problem where they live—and this is up 10 percentage points from early 2018. Affording a home is now an American challenge; we need one another to learn how to handle this challenge best. For over a decade, Lift Orlando has been working with residents to create mixed-income housing opportunities, bringing beautiful homes to places like Pendana at West Lakes and Pendana Senior Residences. Both were created thanks to our phenomenal partner Columbia Residential. You can upLift your neighbor with Lift Orlando, too. We've just completed year one of our five-year 21st Century Community Halls project and boy has it been a busy one! So far 38 of our 80 member halls have been visited for a face-to-face audit with many more lined up for visits in early 2024. Over the next four years, we will also be reaching out to volunteers who run rural halls not in our network to better understand their needs and engage them in this project. So what is a '21st Century Community Hall' - find out by looking at our video with great examples from across the county. Want to find out more? We're running a 21st Century Community Halls Conference on Thursday 25th January 2024. This will provide a fantastic opportunity for village halls and community buildings to network with and share issues/solutions with other trustees and individuals who run halls from across Berkshire. In the afternoon we will be looking at how our community buildings can proactively work towards a low-carbon future. Learn how to calculate both financial and carbon savings by making environmental improvements/changes. Part 1: 2. From Shadows to Sunshine Turning the Tide The relentless efforts of Sunnyside United begin to sway public opinion, leading to increased scrutiny of Luxe Realty’s practices. Under pressure, city officials agree to reevaluate the redevelopment plans and open discussions about affordable housing and the preservation of community spaces. A New Vision In a dramatic turn of events, the CEO of Luxe Realty, influenced by the rising public backlash and inspired by the unity and passion of the Sunnyside community, agrees to meet with Sunnyside United. Through a series of negotiations, a new plan is forged: one that includes affordable housing units, spaces for existing small businesses, and the creation of a community fund to support local initiatives. The Celebration The story culminates in a vibrant street festival in Sunnyside, symbolizing the community’s victory and resilience. Maria and the members of Sunnyside United are celebrated as heroes, having shown that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, collective action and community spirit can prevail. Reflection “From Shadows to Sunshine” is a testament to the power of community action and solidarity in protecting the social fabric of neighborhoods facing the threat of gentrification. It serves as an inspiring reminder that when communities unite for a common cause, they can illuminate paths to equitable and inclusive development.
