El Portal Place has received an Award of Merit in the Renovation/Restoration category by Engineering News-Record. In partnerships with Contra Costa County and City of San Pablo, Overaa and STUDIO T-SQ designed and built one of the first office to residential conversion projects in the Bay Area, reimagining a two-level, 27,000 square-foot office building into 54 micro-unit apartments for homeless adults with disabilities. Adaptive reuse of the commercial building into supportive housing required adding on 6,000 SF under the existing overhangs, demolishing the center of the structure to make a courtyard for egress and light, an extensive seismic retrofit, all new interior finishes, new roof, new landscape by BASE Landscape Architecture and site work. Congrats to all our partners on this unique project and many thanks to California’s #Homekey program and supporters of Measure X for making it possible.
