Here's a new paper on #passion in the Journal of Business Venturing! I wrote it with two great friends and colleagues: Anne Domurath and Simon Taggar. Oddly, we are all reported to be working at LUT University in Finland...but that only applies to me. Anne and Simon are at the Lazaridis School of Business & Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada (as am I for a few more months). If you are interested: We studied the influence of inter- and intra-individual team dynamics on entrepreneurial passion change, and we looked at the relevance of passion change to important outcomes. We drew on person-fit theory and tested our hypotheses with data from a fabulous European accelerator program. This involved 343 team members nested in 79 newly formed teams. There's too many results to report here (a big complex study!) but as an example, we see that entrepreneurial intent is predicted by both (a) end-state levels of individual passion and (b) passion growth trajectories for inventing and founding (but not developing). We also see that team passion trajectories predict team performance. In a nutshell - if you study levels of passion at a point in time, you miss the powerful impacts of change that are captured when you analyze passion growth trajectories. #entrepreneurialpassion #passionchange #passiongrowth #entrepreneurshipresearch #entrepreneurialteams #newventures

✨Introducing the next of this year's new alumni ambassadors! David Knox EMSBE class 23/24 "The EMBSE can be a springboard. Capable of making you a catalyst, co-founder or counsellor in a wide range of social business ventures, it can give you the confidence to critique and contribute, to assess, improve and to design social impact that will grow. Particular eye-openers for me included EMBSE’s focus on solving “wicked” social problems. These have defeated multi-nationals, governments and non-profit foundations – but not impact founders. Context came from express history of climate change, dual purpose corporations, UN Sustainable Development Goals and fellow-students from several continents representing multiple occupations. But mainly from teaching by LSE professors, impact founders and guest speakers with awesome real-word experience. A former diplomat imprisoned by generals, a UK inner city educational pioneer supported by Michelle Obama and volume ophthalmic surgeons became our tutors and subjects – and scalability (thinking big, and thinking measurable) our mantra. Weekly video conferences from five time zones under-pinned (along with AI research) five “Altruistic Entrepreneur Project” pitches to an outside panel before our final written assignments. Practical use? Designing and refining template social impact collaborations. Reducing ideas to (and expanding them from) the “business model canvas” proforma LSE taught us has been key. Two collaborations capable of seeding or accelerating investable societal change – designed for local then global use – are occupying me now. Both involve a secular movement that counters social exclusion in 40 countries: Emmaus International. Both should pilot in France and UK, before scaling up in those nations’ former colonies – without either committing the “intervention colonialism” we studied at LSE, or ignoring past wrongs." 🔗 Read our latest blog post with insights from each of this years new alumni ambassadors here: https://ow.ly/craY50TUmnY

Had a fantastic time moderating the panel on digital transformation. Organizations need to be careful about jumping on trends. They need to evaluate their digital needs viz-a-viz their business goals and strategy before deciding to invest scare resources. Thank you to all the panelists who made the panel rich with their insights. #DigitalTransformation

💡 Really insightful day at the Chartered Association of Business Schools Interdisciplinary Research Symposium in Bristol yesterday. The focus was both on the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of interdisciplinary research. Why is it important, and how can business schools catalyse more of it. I was pleased to be invited to speak about our fantastic interdisciplinary work at the Enterprise Research Centre (UK) at University of Warwick - Warwick Business School A few key points stood out during the day for me: 💡 There is a clear case for IDR in the context of the current time – both due to the complexity of the societal problems we face and also the pressure on business schools to demonstrate more clearly how they can make a difference and be resilient. 💡 Research Councils are recognising the importance of IDR, particularly because of its ability to tackle complex problems in a range of areas. More funding is being made available, but researchers need to pay more attention to how they integrate multiple approaches so that projects are truly interdisciplinary. 💡 Leadership is crucial in terms of creating an environment in which IDR can flourish, spaces need to be created where ideas can be exchanged and new connections made, and careers paths need to recognise the IDR route. Business schools need to have confidence in the unique contribution they can make to IDR projects – in terms of bringing the business perspective and connections. 💡 Relationship building is key to successful IDR, and this is frequently time-consuming. High quality support from professional staff is crucial and needs more resourcing. A great discussion, which I’m sure will continue. And we got to go on a historic boat too on a beautiful day! 📰 A lovely midweek read for all our Cambridge colleagues and connections – Teri F. Willey recalls her five year tenure as founding director of Cambridge Enterprise. Tony Quested asks the questions, and there are some really interesting stories from way back in 2006, when Cambridge Enterprise was created as part of Cambridge University to improve knowledge transfer and research impact. The organisation, heading towards its 20th year, is responsible for facilitating and using the incredibly high-quality of the University research to "create globally leading economic and social impact". Take a few minutes and read the background to this Cambridge institution in its own right, that is now deeply embedded in the country's innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem. A few takeaway phrases from us: – "How did you go about putting your successful model in place? Listening, and asking a lot of questions to a lot of people and listening some more." – "We typically had equity in around 80 companies at any one time while I was there and under Geraldine’s leadership worked with each one to see how we could support their success." – "we learned we had not communicated well enough that we were there for the University of Cambridge: a limited company, limited by shares with only one share holder: The University of Cambridge. I’m happy to share that I completed my Master's degree at Queen's University this August! A huge thank you to the most supportive supervisor, Jim McLellan, for his invaluable help throughout this journey, and all the research participants for their time and expertise. It was a unique experience to explore science-based academic entrepreneurship pathways in university-anchored non-metropolitan ecosystems! My thesis focused on the diverse factors and pathways influencing academic entrepreneurs in STEM and Health Sciences within the Queen’s ecosystem. Key findings revealed that prior experience with patents, startups, and international exposure in leading centre, combined with leveraging local ecosystem resources, significantly enhances entrepreneurial success. Also, participation in non-curricular entrepreneurship programs, support from Technology Transfer Offices, access to space and equipment, and interdisciplinary collaboration are crucial drivers of innovation. We developed an automated pathway map (see below) to better understand these diverse trajectories, transcending traditional metrics and capturing the complexity of entrepreneurial journeys. In one of our interviews, an academic entrepreneur reflected, "If the goal is to create more stories like mine, then showing what the pathway looks like, retelling these stories, is important." We hope this initial roadmap can guide researchers in transforming their inventions into market-ready innovations that create lasting societal impact.
