We're so pleased to celebrate Black fatherhood today at FNC with the book launch of our partners the Black Male Artists Collective. A true labor of love 2 years in the making, "Black + Fatherhood = Love" is a photobook collecting the images and words of Black fathers in their local Boston communities, challenging and affirming narratives and stereotypes of Black fatherhood.

It's #BlackHistoryMonth, and this year's theme is Reclaiming Narratives. It's an invitation for Black communities to reshape how Black history is perceived and taught by stepping into the role of storyteller, historian or custodian. This month we'll be putting a spotlight on the heroes (known and unsung) who have made an indelible impact on our communities and business landscapes. Spoiler: They may even include some of our own colleagues... Who will you be celebrating? #blackbusinesses #blackownedbusinesses #BHM #ReclaimingNarratives

Here are some ways to take part in the celebration! 1. Educational Activities: Attend lectures, workshops, or panel discussions about black history and contemporary issues. 2. Cultural Exposure: Explore and support black art, music, literature, and film by visiting museums and galleries. 3. Community Engagement: Participate in community events or volunteer organizations that support Black communities. 4. Reflective Practices: Use this time to learn more about black history, the civil rights movement, and influential figures.

The Counseling Hub is celebrating Juneteenth today!! Juneteenth is an annual observance on June 19 to remember when Union soldiers enforced the Emancipation Proclamation and freed all remaining slaves in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. Today is also a reminder to educate yourself on Black History, support Black businesses, follow Black-led organizations, and/or learn about Black artists–authors, musicians, dancers, visual artists… the wide-ranging diversity of Black experience and expression! Today is also a reminder to always stand up against oppression, exploitation, injustice, and violence. Wishing everyone a fulfilled Juneteenth! \#juneteenth \#thecounselinghub \#socialjustice

DotHouse proudly celebrates Black History Month (BHM)! BHM is every February and celebrates the achievements and history of African Americans. BHM was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. The 2024 theme centralizes on "African Americans and the Arts" spanning the many impacts Black Americans have had on visual arts, music, cultural movements, and more. Social justice has historically developed visual and literary arts to capture the spirit and platforms of resistance, and to disseminate those messages to audiences outside of mainstream methods. African American art is infused with African, Caribbean, and the Black American lived experiences. In the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression, the African American influence has been paramount. African American artists have used art to preserve history and community memory as well as for empowerment. We encourage everyone to learn more about BHM by engaging in events throughout our communities. Link: https://nmaahc.si.edu/ #BlackHistoryMonth

Today is June 19th, or Juneteenth, the day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, however that proclamation did not instantly free all those enslaved. In 1865 on June 19th, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure that the enslaved people were freed and officially end slavery in the United States. Celebrating Juneteenth is a great start, however there is still work that can be done every day. Work like embracing small-disadvantaged businesses in your supply chain. Showing support for black owned businesses and by amplifying black voices. Entrepreneur voices like Janice Bryant Howroyd, the founder and CEO of ActOne Group, the largest woman-minority owned workforce management company in the US and author of “The Art of Work”. Artists voices like Shonda Rimes who uses her talents and skills to create hit shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder. Not to mention the latest Netflix hit show Bridgerton. Historical voices like Rosa Parks who helped initiate the civil rights movement in the United States. Listen to the voices of those with stories to tell. Embrace the use of minority owned businesses and don’t just set a goal for the uses of these businesses, proactively work to exceed the goal. That is the work that can be done to celebrate Juneteenth every day.

Kendi symbolizes better than anyone else the diversity, equity, and inclusion regime that has implanted itself in institutions and all walks of life since the destabilizing Black Lives Matter riots of 2020. When he is in trouble, DEI and the critical race theory it operationalizes are in trouble. My column this week:

🖤Join us in celebrating Black History Month at the office! 🖤 Let's honor and recognize the countless contributions made by Black Americans throughout history. The history and experiences of Black people are an integral part of America's heritage and have shaped both our past and present. The criminal justice system has long been intertwined with the oppression of black people, from slavery to the mass incarceration we see today. As public defenders, we recognize the responsibility we hold in fighting for justice and equality for all. Black Americans face disparate treatment at every stage of the criminal process, from traffic stops to sentencing. We must remember that the U.S. Constitution, when written, excluded people of color, and racial discrimination was enforced by the courts. It is crucial for public defenders to understand this history of struggle to effectively advocate against injustice. Throughout history, people of all backgrounds have joined together to fight against injustice, and we must continue this legacy. Black history matters every day, not just in February. Together, we can work towards a more just and equal society.

It’s Black History Month. As we continue to see attacks on DEI efforts and programming, I challenge everyone in my network to examine how they can value, care and respect for Black individuals such that either they will be impacted or they will make an impact on others in a new and different way this month. Will you find ways to learn more about Black individuals and their history? Will you share the information you already know with someone else? Will you amplify the voices of Black individuals in your network? Will you participate in a celebration? Will you support a Black owned organization? Sound off on how you plan to make impact this Black History Month in the comments. #blackhistorymonth #inclusionmatters
