We have plenty to figure out but we know this can big based on the success we've seen from the likes of Flexport, Sonos, Inc., & BODYARMOR Sports Nutrition. To keep the momentum, we need to add 2 really gifted account executives this quarter. But this role isn't for everybody. When I think about the best performers at Parabola, two things come to mind... 1. They sweat the details and expect others to do the same. It's not surprising that some were bankers, coaches, and accountants before thriving here. 2. They are mission driven. They get excited about empowering non-technical teams and know they can't add value unless they are experts on the product. No bad deals, no upset customers and they sell the way they'd want to buy (s/o David Priemer). FWIW, partnering with Alex Yaseen, Andrew Udell, Dylan Weaknecht, Ben Pollack, Aidan Lenihan and Kathryn DeLillio makes it incredibly fun. If you don't want your partner program to fail before it even really starts, hire a partner professional. Many of us have started in something else and got moved over into partnerships and that's how we started our partnerships careers, which is amazing... But if you're starting a serious program from scratch, hire someone who's done it before... not somebody who has only dabbled from the sales or marketing team, even if it's tempting to just shift a headcount over. Turns out, there are a whole mess of them on the market right now. Brilliant professionals who have done this before and have the strategies and skills to do it again. Also... someone who is building a partner program from scratch isn't a partner manager. They're a Head of Partnerships. If you want to attract the right kind of folks to your new partnerships role make sure you title (and compensate) it correctly. That's all.

The third and final college that I attended bouncing across three different states (thanks to baseball injuries) was when my passion for Emergency Management started. I decided to major in Homeland Security with a focus in Emergency Management while I continued to pursue playing baseball. When that first class started I was hooked. I knew baseball was a long shot so at least I was able to find a second passion (a more realistic passion 😃). But Emergency Management isn't always about writing plans, being activated into an EOC, deployments, etc. There are other routes that you can take that still include Emergency Management. While I worked in both the public and private sector for 8 + years I discovered an area that I felt even more passionate about that I wanted to pursue. Technology. I was fascinated by the technology we use in Emergency Management. To communicate, to manage incidents, create and collaborate on plans, etc. I started a mission to be involved in technology that matters to Emergency Managers to get the job done. Over the past 4 + years I've been able to do just that. The past year and a half I was able to get more involved in product and pursue my passion. Why am I sharing this information? And they’ll add a culture to your company that can't be replicated by hiring a top dog. So next time you're hiring, ask yourself: Do you want someone who’s had everything given to them? Or someone who’s worked damn hard for it? The choice is yours.

I hope the recent uptick in the amount of outreach I've received from recruiters on LI reflects that my recruiting friends are getting hired again! Rant Warning: But I do have some advice for those who recruit in the tech industry; please learn the difference between Project, Program, and Product Managers. Sure, there are some common skills, but what gets these people up in the morning and excited about their day is very different. As a product guy, I relish the opportunity to talk to customers, analyze data, and work with design and engineering teams to build product experiences people love. I enjoy working with the marketing team and Program Managers to create go to market plans. At this stage of my career, I love leading teams of product managers to build products with sharp product market fit that create strong value chains for our customers. So please don't waste time reaching out to people currently employed as Product Managers with a 6 month contract for an entry level Project Manager role. This shotgun approach to outreach only leads to rejection and reflects poorly on you and your client/company.
