Today is World Food Day. This day is celebrated every year worldwide on October 16 to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. This afternoon, I attended the screening of Digging In by Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems Funders (SAFSF). This film is designed to help funders understand concentration and consolidation, land access, and climate change and explore the connection these issues have to their work and the work of their grantees. The topics discussed in this film included who our future farmers are, land access, and climate change impacts made me think about our current food system. Earlier this year, I attended the 18th Annual Chicago Food Justice Summit, where I saw the future of our food system discussed with the inclusion of minority groups throughout the city of Chicago, which opened my eyes to the diversity within agriculture and food policy. Currently, we are approaching the time for renewal of our next Farm Bill, which will impact farmers and many citizens within our country who are supported by SNAP benefits. It is important to express what you would like to see within the next Farm Bill.
