"Tir is a call, all the more powerful for being implied rather than spelt out, for a realignment of our food system so that it works not just for the environment and our physical nourishment but our deepest spiritual needs as well. We don’t know what that will look like yet, but we have some pointers and it is never too late to try." A critical observation - "the shifting relationship between food production and wildlife on a single farm near Bala. Government policy attempts to fit them together again, but the forces of social change and global commerce work powerfully in the opposite direction, at least for now." Carwyn - like many public goods, critical resources - we have no ownership or control of, their added value not reinvesting within 20 minute neighbourhoods. Community needs this for life to thrive. A pre NHS mid Wales farmer would give my Grandfather food in payment for G.P. Practices - a hard remote rural existence, but then later Welsh market Towns in the sixties were a far more a community resilient, resource efficient 20 minute neighbourhood than now. Wealth extraction pillaged life, community, & resources - whilst killing nature, and making life on earth for our future generations extremely precarious. How do you shoe horn the Sustainable Farming Scheme and Net Zero into that - whilst gaining social, and cultural licence - answer you don't, you can't. You deliver systems change, and the #WellbeingEconomy. The just, green transition. Wellbeing Economy Cymru (WE Cymru)
We all need good stories to be part of, and the best ones unite us across the divides of tribal and personal interests. In Tir: The Story of the Welsh Landscape, Carwyn Graves tells how human society and nature have evolved together over millennia, forming a system in which the land supports both. Welsh culture has been particularly attentive to the particular details of the homes in which we are rooted (cynefin, bro, milltir sgwar), and this gives us a way to swerve the ideological currents that so confuse public debate. Instead we can learn to understand the landscape, whether or not we are born Welsh, and together build a new relationship with it, through farming, gardening and of course cooking and eating. This is the guiding vision of the Wales Real Food and Farming Conference, to be held this year on 20-22 November in Lampeter - so get your tickets now and be part of a good story! Board member, contributor, scribbler, speaker. Sometimes blunt. Not polishing my credentials for any more govt roles.
Silly question perhaps but what is the current figure for the amount of wildflower rich haymeadows lost since 1960 or 1970? Or name a date. UK or just England. It seems to be roughly the same figure we quote for this since 1985 - can that be true? Are we replacing more slowly than losing? Or are we replacing at a different rate? Where's the evidence to be found? Or do we just use the traditional old figure? Plantlife International National Trust

IT’S PERSONAL Did I mention that much of my early life was spent on farms in England + Scotland? It is such a great way to grow up, and it connected me to nature in a most profound way. There’s something so satisfying about getting your hands dirty doing hard work. Mucking out the cows and picking tatties (potatoes for my American friends) are all well and good, but bailing hay was always my favorite task. Back then, all the hay bales were rectangular. It wasn’t until I revisited Scotland and saw these beautiful round bales and I had to photograph them. This field is the view from my Mum's kitchen, and I love it. It's been many years since I lifted a bale of hay, but I can promise you that straw and dirt smell exactly like they always have. It's like a time machine... It takes you right back. I have friends who are farmers to this day and I have nothing but respect for their craft and dedication. No farmers = No food. It’s as simple as that. Maybe next time I’m in Scotland I’ll pop by Comrie and see some old friends, I’d like that.
