Tupperware has joined the ranks of Kleenex, Frisbee, Dumpster, Velcro, Band-Aid, and ChapStick as a winner of the brand game. “Winning” meaning that people refer to all competing brands as their brand because they’ve completely owned the definition of the product/service. For reference, Frisbee is just a brand of flying disc, etc. The insight seems to be: make your brand name easier (and more fun) to say than the “generic” name of the product you make, and ideally be the first to do it. Case in point: no one wants to say “food storage container” if they can say a fun, mentally sticky word like Tupperware instead. Obviously name is just one element of why these brands dominate our minds. But it’s a big one.
