It’s #EqualResearchDay! 💥 Evvy created #EqualResearchDay on June 10 because women weren’t required in U.S. clinical research until June 10th, 1993 (Think Equal Pay Day but for the gender health gap!) “Fertility fog.” It's a term that describes the lack of knowledge that women in cultures and nations all over the world have about their own fertility, and it's more widespread and prevalent than you might think. A 2011 study in Fertility and Sterility, for example, surveyed 3,345 childless women in Canada between the ages of 20 and 50. Despite initially assessing their own fertility knowledge as high, the researchers found that only half of them could answer at least 6 out of 16 questions correctly. This comes as no surprise to those of us in the space. In my everyday conversations with Cofertility members, I'm consistently struck by how many women share that in the early days of their journey, they felt uncertain or misinformed about their own reproductive health. Hearing their stories deeply reinforces the importance of Cofertility’s mission: to empower women with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions about their fertility. Cofertility began with the realization that the traditional process of finding an egg donor was transactional, sterile, and impersonal, reducing donors to anonymized numbers on a spreadsheet. In response, we created a meaningful, human-first, no cash-compensation egg donation matching platform that prioritizes support, transparency, and ethics for all parties involved. We're proud of the strides we've made in promoting a more equitable and compassionate approach to egg donation, and thrilled that along the way, we’ve been able to offer women more optionality, more autonomy over their family planning timeline, and greater accessibility to egg freezing so they can invest in their own reproductive future through our egg sharing programs. We are SO proud to partner with Evvy to celebrate Equal Research Day, a vital reminder that women were not required to be included in U.S. clinical research until 1993. This historic oversight has contributed to the significant gaps in our understanding of the female body and modern medicine. Today, we focus on the work that needs to be done to close these gaps. Things were supposed to be better by now. ▶ In 1985, the Public Health Service Task Force released a report showing that the lack of women in clinical trials was leading to suboptimal women’s healthcare. ▶Eight long years later, the 1993 NIH Revitalization Act became law. It required the NIH to ensure that researchers include women and minority individuals as subjects in clinical trials and, just as important, that they track how study variables might impact them differently from other subjects. ▶This legislation was supposed to significantly reduce the gender gap in health research, but that didn't happen. ▶A 2019 review of 142 NIH-funded clinical trials in the U.S. concluded that NIH policies created in response to the 1993 Revitalization act had not led to significant increases in reporting results by sex, race, or ethnicity. ▶ The review authors reported that too many researchers continue to exclude female humans or female animals in their studies. When they do include females, they frequently fail to analyze or report data separately by sex, much less by gender. Without that information, the authors state, we’re “leaving women’s health to chance.” Thank you to Evvy for shining a spotlight on this truly effed reality and introducing #EqualResearchDay. We are with you 100% and excited to see women's health companies spearheading research — across many fields, including pelvic health — to help fill the gap.

Heart attacks are mislabeled as anxiety. Autoimmune disease diagnoses are delayed, which can lead to serious complications. Pain is often minimized or outright ignored. And we haven’t even peeked beneath the iceberg yet. More than half of women report delaying healthcare due to frustration with the healthcare system. What would the healthcare landscape look like with #equalresearch? Where not only are women’s health issues taken into consideration, but women’s bodies as well?

Women make up 80% of autoimmune patients, yet men represent 2X more participants in autoimmune clinical research. That's a scary stat, especially for someone who's been personally impacted by one of these conditions. Not to mention, 45% of us are labeled as "chronic complainers" in the average 4.5 year, 5 doctor diagnostic odyssey to get answers. There's no doubt in my mind that this phenomenon is due to the fact that autoimmune disease largely impacts minority populations, like women and people of color. Solving the autoimmune crisis has to start from the ground up: we can't expect to close the gender gap in healthcare if the makeup of our clinical studies doesn't reflect the populations who are disproportionately impacted by these conditions. Grateful to the Evvy team for creating #EqualResearchDay and shining a light on conditions like autoimmune disease that primarily impact women and are underfunded and under-researched. This is why we do what we do at WellTheory: to raise the standard of care for a population that's been underserved and overlooked for far too long.

I love this initiative started by Evvy!💥 Did you know women weren't required in U.S. clinical research until June 10th, 1993? That's why, on #EqualResearchDay, we're raising awareness about the gender health gap. This gap in research has led to countless holes in our understanding of the female body. The result? Delays in diagnoses, failed treatments, unexplained symptoms, and medical gaslighting for women everywhere. Why is fertility care often separated from overall health? The unfortunate truth is that our healthcare system isn't designed around the female anatomy. As a result, conditions and diseases that disproportionately affect women are under-researched and overlooked. This leaves women and their families bearing an unfair burden of out-of-pocket healthcare expenses, placing women at an economic disadvantage for a significant part of their lives. Fertility is not just a "women's health issue" - everyone has a fertility journey! 🪷 At Lotus Fertility Insurance, we're committed to closing this gap by supporting research and innovation in fertility health and by building a new, innovative insurance product to ease the financial burden. #EqualResearchDay is a reminder that we still have a long way to go to achieve health equity. It’s #EqualResearchDay! 💥 Evvy created #EqualResearchDay on June 10 because women weren’t required in U.S. clinical research until June 10th, 1993 (Think Equal Pay Day but for the gender health gap!) To this day, there are countless holes ⚫ in our scientific and medical understanding of the female body — and that directly impacts us as patients. If you’ve ever experienced delays in diagnoses, failed treatments, mystery symptoms with no answers, or medical gaslighting — #EqualResearchDay is for you. This year, we brought together 46 innovative companies and compiled 100 Effed Facts about the Gender Health Gap across 12 health areas: ⚫ Autoimmune Disease ⚫ Brain + Mental Health ⚫ Cancer ⚫ Endometriosis ⚫ Fertility ⚫ Heart Health ⚫ Hormonal Health ⚫ Maternal Health ⚫ Medical Gaslighting ⚫ Menopause ⚫ Menstrual & Sexual Health ⚫ Vaginal & Urinary Health Earlier this week, we launched a limited-edition coffee table book featuring all 100 Effed Facts to benefit Women's Health Access Matters (you can order a copy at EqualResearchDay.com before they sell out... !) Starting in 2020, I suffered through a long, painful diagnostic odyssey to understand my debilitating chronic pain. I saw over 20 different specialists, had 10 different invasive pain relief procedures, and sat on a 6-month waitlist to see a neurologist, even in a major metro like New York City. I saw firsthand how our healthcare system is fundamentally broken for specialty care, particularly in areas like neurology and so many areas of women’s health. Data is not properly leveraged, specialist wait times are worsening, comprehensive care is scant, and fee-for-service visits aren’t aligned with longitudinal improvement. On top of this, many pain conditions disproportionately affect women, who have been left out of clinical research for an appalling number of decades. For example, women make up about 75% of the 30 million Americans who live with migraine. Neura Health was founded to help close the access gap and support the 140 million Americans who suffer from conditions like migraine, sleep disorders, multiple sclerosis, dementia, and others. We’re excited to be building in a time when many other women’s health companies are working to advance access and research in condition areas that disproportionately affect women.
