This, according to a briefing by the European Environment Agency titled 'PFAS in textiles in Europe's circular economy'. 🧵Key takeaways from the briefing: 📍Textiles are one of the largest sources of PFAS pollution in Europe, making up 35% of global PFAS demand. 📍PFAS in textiles create barriers to circularity by increasing contamination risks during reuse and recycling. 📍 The use of PFAS in most textiles is unnecessary – alternatives already exist for non-essential uses, offering an opportunity to significantly reduce PFAS risks in Europe. 📍For professional and technical textiles like firefighting gear and medical textiles, special waste collection and destruction methods should be considered to manage contamination risks.
