125 days into 2024 and already wandering outside the Earth's safe operating space.. 🌍 While the world is way off track to meet the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement and the sixth mass extinction of wildlife on Earth is accelerating (without even mentioning the other boundaries we have already crossed), voting does not seem like the most senseless thing to do. #europe matters, elections matter and this year the outcome will define the course on the most pressing issues of our times - #climateaction, #multilateralism and safeguarding #democracy. That's why reporting appropriatly on the #euelections2024 with a clear focus on what matters is crucial across the continent. Yet, the #europeanunion is tricky to understand and follow at the best of times. Combined with the complexity of #energytransition and #climatepolicy issues - between member states and other regions - and the difficult #geopolitics this makes an focused and relevant coverage both more important and more difficult. The factsheet of Julian Wettengel provides in good Clean Energy Wire | CLEW manner both: A guide to #europeanunion policy making and elections and a guide to the issues at stake - ideal for #journalists, #energy experts and enthusiastic #european policy beginners (who all can sign up for our newsletters, which are also free and more frequent than my posts https://lnkd.in/d8cgH2n). 🗳️ Ready to have an Impact? The EU Elections are at hand, and you can make a difference by voting and ensuring your voice is heard! 🌍 One of the key messages of CEMR’s Call to Action is to build active subsidiarity and strong multi-level governance cooperation. Collaboration and coordination across and between levels of government are essential to deliver public services that effectively respond to people’s needs and for Europe’s ability to properly respond to future crises. EU policy and decision-makers must cooperate with Local and Regional Governments (LRGs) on how best to achieve the ambitious EU objectives including climate, energy, and sustainable industry ensuring subnational challenges and needs are properly addressed. 🌳 Vote to make an impact on climate, the environment and our habitat. #BetheImpact 🚀 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/e5F5ydig #VoteforTomorrow #UseYourVote #EUelections #ClimateAction #Sustainability 🌿🌐

Upcoming elections to the European Parliament could shift the balance of power in Brussels, potentially impacting EU legislative priorities, especially regarding climate policy and economic regulation. While much of its Green Deal legislation has been passed, this is likely to affect future policy rather than measures already agreed. Business can expect a more friendly approach from policymakers, who emphasize the need for a more industrially competitive energy transition. https://lnkd.in/gahd_fHB

With the EU elections and the new Dutch government approaching, I get more and more questions from clients, concerning the future climate ambition of the Netherlands and the EU. With the expected swing to the right, both in the European Parliament and national elections, more and more companies are becoming worried that their sustainability efforts will no longer be recognised. In one of my latest pieces, I am thoroughly unpacking this issue to reassure that the climate ambitions are here to stay. Despite a shift in narrative, where competitiveness and industrialisation come at the centre, we are also entering the implementation phase of the Green Deal that opens new windows of opportunity for European businesses. Read my piece here 👉 https://lnkd.in/e6zK5QWD and scroll through the carousel below for the main highlights. The European Sustainable Development Report 2023/24 The European elections in June 2024 will chart the course for the next European Parliament and Commission, as well as the future of the EU's global role. As discussed in the European Sustainable Development Report 2023/24, it is crucial for political parties, citizens, and institutions to enhance European democracy, social cohesion, and prosperity. The Report states that decisive actions must be taken before 2030 to achieve key global goals, including the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. It notes that the incoming EU leaders have a historic responsibility to negotiate the next global agenda for sustainable development and to determine the EU's budget for the next seven years. It calls on EU political parties, citizens, and institutions to work together for a cooperative world order and a sustainable future. #EUElections2024 #SustainableDevelopment #GlobalGoals

🗞 Bellona’s reaction to the European Elections! 🗳️Today marks a new cycle for European politics: around 147 millions of EU citizens cast their votes and elected the new European Parliament. Representatives with a more sceptical approach towards climate policy have gained more seats compared to the past legislature, which will make it more challenging to design ambitious climate policy. The next European cycle needs to better emphasise the broader societal benefits of ambitious and well-designed climate action. 📢 “Despite reports of backlash against climate policies and a rise of climate sceptical EU representatives, the outcome of these European elections shows that the next European Parliament will be formed in majority by supporters of the Green Deal. The next European Parliament will have the responsibility to act together in reaching the net-zero objective for the benefit of both its industries and its citizens” – Francesco Lombardi Stocchetti, Policy Advisor on Sustainable Finance & Economy 🌍 Europe must move beyond viewing the green transition as an ideological battle and start implementing decisive climate policies. There were serious concerns heading into the recent European Union elections that the far right would win enough seats to force itself into a ruling coalition and roll back parts of the continent’s Green Deal. So far, that bullet has been dodged, writes Adrian Hiel. “The election results show that while the far right has gained some ground, they do not have enough seats to form a stable ruling coalition or dismantle the European Green Deal,” says Linda Kalcher, executive director of Strategic Perspectives, a Brussels-based think tank. “Any rollback would be economic insanity as it would create uncertainty for business and investors at times when the U.S. and China are the more appealing destinations for net-zero industries.” #EUelections2024 #GreenDeal #climatecrisis https://lnkd.in/d97zEcSP
