𝗞𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹 – 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀! Do the benefits of Kiel Canal, the short-cut between the North Sea and Baltic, outweigh the costs? In environmental terms it’s a no-brainer. The alternative route round North Jutland is 680 km further, takes a day longer, and causes significantly higher emissions of climate-harming ship’s diesel. But what about the Canal’s economics? In 2023, Germany is spending 30 times more on the Canal’s maintenance than it collects in canal dues. Yet experts have calculated that in Germany alone, Kiel Canal generates €570 million in added value. The Canal’s future now seems secure. Today and tomorrow, the Green Inland Ports project team (Roy van den Berg, Henrik Armbrecht, Ioanna Kourounioti, Khalid Tachi, Laura Unt, Leïla Morais Nkunku and myself) will present results from our project during the MAGPIE Port Citizen Workshop in Wesel. These two projects - though different in size and background - have great potential for cooperation and synergies. I am looking forward to hearing about the direction and results of MAGPIE today, specifically the lessons learnt from the example of the #LOG4NRW project aiming to shift freight van road to barges. Tomorrow, our project team will present results from the Green Inland Ports project. Among others, we will present a tool to establish a quantified environmental benchmark for inland ports and the results of a comprehensive analysis to determine the roll-out potential for urban and short-range freight IWT. This workshop provides us a platform to present results from the first phase of the project. It is also the kick-off for the second phase of the project in which our team will develop Environmental and Sustainable Management Systems to support inland ports in their crucial role to enable the green transition as multimodal hubs. We are looking forward to working with ambitious ports in 2025 on the implementation of these systems, and we will be holding discussions in the coming days and weeks to identify the key needs of inland ports regarding such systems and tools. It was an honour to be invited by the British Embassy Oslo and the British Ambassador to Norway, Jan Thompson, to host guests as part of a joint celebration within the Official Residence yesterday 🇳🇴 The event allowed the opportunity to officially announce the expansion of our operations into the region and also to celebrate the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Cooperation. Attended by the State Secretary for Fisheries and Oceans, Even Tronstad Sagebakken, government officials and members of the shipping community, we were delighted to hear from the Ambassador, State Secretary and Richard Buckley, Founder and CEO of 90POE, on the importance of the long-standing relationship between the two nations, alignment on ambitions within the Green Industrial Partnership, and the ‘optimism and celebration’ felt in response to further cooperation. Richard Buckley commented:  “At 90POE we are advocates for the use of digital technology to improve maritime operations. Quiet Sound’s collaborative effort reduced underwater noise by 45% with voluntary commercial vessel slowdowns through the Admiralty Inlet corridor in Puget Sound between Whidbey Island and the Olympic Peninsula. Underwater noise is a key concern for Southern Resident killer whales, in addition to reduced Chinook salmon populations and poor water quality. By working across private and public sectors, 70% of vessels decreased their speed during an 80-day slowdown with minimal effects on maritime trade and no safety impacts. https://lnkd.in/gZ8Tueh5
